Verizon

This handset is also available for Verizon in the United States. Anyone wan't to find out the specifics and add some info about it. I could be wrong but I beleive the Verizon version is the first BREW version of the razr available worldwide. Could someone please look into this and make the proper changes ? ***Nov 2006***

Due to the extreme differences in the interface and the functionality of Verizon's V3c, V3m, and now RAZR2 9m, I recommend that these phones should be split into their own page. Any thoughts?

why should the verizon versions be split up. attel has a BREW web browser too, but they dont allow BREW downloads, which I will admit sucks & you'd think after the merger they would've changed it, but my area wasn't affected by the merger. 96.3.174.68 (talk) 04:57, 13 February 2009 (UTC)

More Colours?

I'd heard there was an exclusive 'designer' gold RAZR released only in Europe and East Asia, but not much more. Can anyone clarify this?

Do an image search on your favorite search engine for gold RAZR. Looks like there was one but its kind of ugly.

The Gold RAZR(V3i) is a special 1000 release edition from Dolce and Gabbana. It is a GSM phone and will work for Cingular, T-Mobile, and other GSM providers

There are two versions of this phone. One is a limited edition and engraved with a number (XXXX/1000), and comes in a black D&G Box. This was sold only in D&G outlets in Europe, in Dec 2005.

The second version is a gold V3 that comes in a gold-colored box. It is a second colloboration between Motorola and D&G but it is not a limited edition, and not numbered.

Thickness

I was just looking at this again, and was wondering why this is listed as one of the thinnest clamshell phones in the world? To the best of my knowledge it is still easily the thinnest out there. --Apyule 01:06, 24 August 2005 (UTC)

It very possibly may be, but there could still be some super-thin unknown phone that's thinner. And plus, this it's safer than saying "the thinnest" and then, when a thinner phone comes out, the 2nd thinnest, and so on. --daunrealist 02:44, 26 February 2006 (UTC)

No the razr is no longer the thinest commericaly available phone. Samsung and Sanyo both have phones released in America (and maybe other countries) that are thiner than the razr. There are at least 3 other commericaly available phones in america from the major carriers/manufactures that are thinner than the razr --Nov 9th 2006

Samsung a-900 and the Sanyo Katana. Actually, I have the Sanyo Katana, and it's actually a little thicker then the RAZR. :)

Material

How much of the RAZR is really aluminium, and how much is plastic? I've seen discussion about this, and nobody really seems to know. There is a consensus, however, that most of it is plastic, with the top cover and battery cover made from either aluminium or plastic with a different finish. The keypad, the outer front panel, and the outer rear panel (except the battery cover) are aluminium, I think. The only reason I say that it is because when I grab my RAZR out of a cold area (like my car in winter) I notice that those outer panels are exceptionally cold. -- Danner578 03:07, 10 March 2006 (UTC)

The top flip assembly and the battery door are made of aluminium. The insode flip housing and the ousing around the keyboard area is magnesium. The rear housing near the PCB and speaker alert is plastic, to allow for RF. The CLI lens is glass and the inside/main lens is plastic. I 'm sure that the keyboard is aluminium as well, but 100%.

I have checked that, at least for V3i, the keypad is made of 'nickel-plated copper'.Peterwhy 03:12, 24 August 2006 (UTC)

Razr family

The RAZR V3r should be added. It is a new phone similar to the V3i sold by Cingular. The difference between the V3r and V3i is that the V3r uses Motorola's Digital Audio Player for music playback and the V3i uses iTunes for music playback.

The V3X although somewhat similar in appearance, the PCB archetechure is too completely different to say they are from the same family. FOr instance, the V300, V500, V600 are from the Triplets family, and the V535, V550 and V620 (V600i) are from Triplets Refresh.

Bluetooth Class 1

I think it's worth mentioning that this phone uses Bluetooth class 1 instead of class 2, unlike many other phones.

Cultural impact?

I would like to point out that this phone wasn't much of a cultural phenomenon in the UK and I assume that same about Europe. I agree. This is one of the things that distinguishes this article from other phone articles. The phone seems to be popular with celebrities, and the phone is featured in the game show Cash Cab.

US-centric network information

IMHO the article would be better without highly-changeable, US-centric network availability information (for example "Motorola released a CDMA version of the RAZR with Verizon Wireless and ALLTEL on December 7 2005" - though admittedly it's not all US-centric). The article is about the V3 and I don't think it benefits by going into detail of network-specific availability issues, whether in the US or otherwise. Opinions? Mentioning Verizon could show where the demand for a CDMA version came from. Also, I think that Cingular is the first and only carrier offering the black version so far, so the mention of the carrier is arguably relevant there. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong though.

RAZR V3 and RAZR V3x / Merge with V3x

I think Motorola RAZR V3x should be merged into this. The Motorola V1150 monkier is more of a sidenote/footnote and doesn't warrant the model having a new page, as it's still in the RAZR V3 family of phones. --Mike Tigas 04:48, 4 July 2006 (UTC)

I don't believe that V3X should be merged into this article. I develop software for mobile phones and they are not remotely similar. The V3X is considerably thicker. (it does not follow exactly the same aesthetics as the V3 line). It has 3G. All the others on the RAZR V3 page are just small variations of the design, while the V3X is a totally different phone. They should probably not be merged, since as noted above, they share little in common in terms of actual hardware internals (even though they are superficially similar). The "RAZR" name is now well established, so Motorola will continue to use it, even for products that have nothing in common. Don't merge. V3 and V3x are totally different phones. The software and hardware are very different. The motorola 3G platform is considerably more advanced than the old 2/2.5G platform in terms of what kind of software (Java ME) that you can install and run on it. The only relationship they have is an artificial marketing one. A note would suffice to alert people that the V3x is in a different article Sbwoodside 05:04, 2 August 2006 (UTC)

Appropriateness of tag

In my opinion this article should not be tagged as needing cleaning up to meet Wikipedia quality standards. There is nothing wrong with the article itself. This is not the appropritate place to discuss problems with the phone itself. Remember: that's opinion, not fact

Moving V3c/V3m

I'm going to move the V3c and V3m part of the Wiki to the "3G Models of the RAZR", as they are in fact 3G phones (both support EV-DO, which is Verizon's 3G network). The V3i and V3im are, as far as I know, still only 2G phones so they will stay where they are.

v3m

I have a v3m with Sprint service. It does not have a problem turning the startup sound completely off. I disable the startup sound in the settings and it works fine.

Also, I don't have a problem with contacts... no glitch causing multiple entries from adding additional information for each contact....

I see no mention of the v3t in the article. From what I understand the v3t is basically the v3i just branded for tmobile [1] I was confused momentarily when reading this and didn't see it mentioned, anybody want to mention it in the article? Anyway I've uploaded more a photo of the phone itself and the keypad Image:Razrv3t.jpg and Image:Razrv3tkeypad.jpg if needed. Do you two even know anything about modding? Your posts suggests you don't. Leave the modding links in then until someone more qualified than you can make that determination. If you don't like the text descriptions fine (have you ever listened to the radio or whatched TV? now there's some enthusiastic advertising), change them to your liking but I'll keep putting those links back until you find something else to do. As for you ScottW you should perform your own due diligence don't force us to SHOW YOU if they are valuable or not, go find out yourself and stop being lazy.

Well Immortal, how about actually LOOKING at those links? They aren't spam and they aren't selling anything. These links are just as valid as the links appearing later on in the page from Motorola. The links you keep removing are about the modding community. Maybe you aren't into modding phones, but millions of other people are. Why is it so threatening to you that modding links appear?

I have looked at those sites. But as previously stated wikipedia is not a repository of links, it's NOT A DIRECTORY, it's not the white pages or yellow pages, etc. (please read over WP:NOT). If people want to mod their phones they can google for modding sites like the rest of us. This page is about the phone, not the modding community therefore it is NOT appropriate on this site. Though I might reiterate the question why is it so threatening to you that these links be taken out? Do you have a personal stake in one of them? If so that is still spam. Given WP:NOT those links are spam regardless. Taken directly from WP:SPAM Adding external links to an article for the purpose of promoting a website or a product is not allowed, and is considered to be spam. If you examine the external links currently in the list 9 of them are official websites that are allowed by wikipedia policy. One is the Harvard Working Knowledge that can be integrated into the article as a reference but since it passes WP:V and WP:RS there's no reason why it should be taken out of the external links section for now. This is ridiculous. The article mentions "modding" the phone numerous times to achieve useful and/or functional features, but somehow that's off limits in the external links section. Make up your minds as to whether or not "modding" is an acceptible topic in articles and either bring the links back or remove mention of it from the article. i'm not trying to pick fights with anyone, but the arguments against including a mention of modding seem really confused to me. you need to do more than call it irrelevent; why IS it irrelevent? it's a capability of the phone which many people have taken advantage of, and which there is an online community in support of it. also it seems like some people are arguing for/against having a modding section, and some for/against having modding links. i'd say having either on their own is kinda dumb, but what's wrong with a small section in the article discussing the issue, with references and a couple external links to good representative sites? to have no mention of it at all is absurd (or even worse, to have a mention of it 'as seen below' when the below has been removed, which is what it is now)

as a sidenote: if one person keeps removing a link and another keeps adding, that doesn't make the link spam, but it does make BOTH of them in violation of wiki policy. don't just revert back and forth.

Modding

As a result of the overwhelming popularity of the RAZR, the modding community has been phenomenally successful in cracking the phones' underlying structures and developing "mods" that users can implement on their own handsets.

By modding the V3 RAZR it is possible to unlock special features not available on the stock phone. The most common mods include adding video recording support, uploading Java games from a PC, changing the image on the outer LCD screen (the "cl.gif", which normally displays the carrier's logo), getting rid of the service provider lock, getting rid of the date and time display on the main menu screen, adding new "skins", altering the text and menu items, and much more.

The V3c, on the Verizon Wireless network, has a unique Verizon-designed GUI, which is the case with nearly all Verizon Wireless phones, which is more cumbersome than the standard Motorola GUI. Many of the phone's features are also crippled. Wired News suggested this was done intentionally so that users of the phone would have to pay data rate charges to send images and other files over the network instead of just using a USB cable connected to their computer. Through modding, the Verizon interface can be replaced by ALLTEL's, giving it the original Motorola user interface, a faster button response time, and a few additional features. Another mod for the Verizon RAZR's is called tethering, in which the phone acts like a modem for a computer, letting the computer go online through Verizon's broadband network and it only costs minutes, not cell phone internet fees.

On later October 2006, Sprint released their carrier branded version of the RAZR V3m. The Sprint version has all functions enabled that were crippled in the release by Verizon, and it uses a Sprint designed GUI that is regarded as a more efficient implementation than that of Verizon.

The debate was not over the modding section but the linkspam in the modding section. The link spam that was continually added back into the article by a (now blocked) user and a few IPs. I haven't been keeping a close eye on the article so I'm not sure when the modding section itself was removed however it wasn't removed when the link spam was. The user/IP who was adding that stuff wasn't overeager to share an idea so much as overeager to put his own websites on the list, though that wasn't realized until later (google the users name and they'll show up). When the user/ip kept adding links as well as his own they were all removed citing WP:NOT a directory. After a while the list gradually kept getting bigger and bigger and I believe, if I remember right, the argument took a turn and went down the 'why should so and so links deserve to be on there but not these links' at which point all the links that weren't motorola were removed, though the modding section and references for that were left in. The modding links really didn't add anything to the article besides a 'here look at this particular modding site/board". Personally I don't think there needs to be some 'go here to learn how to mod your motorola phone' because that can be easily accomplished using Google or any other search engine. However if it's a reliable source and gives more info and can be added into the article as a reference.. but that's just me, and if you feel that the article needs them then go ahead.--ImmortalGoddezz 00:40, 12 December 2007 (UTC)

On the Fox TV show House, Dr. House's medical staff also uses RAZRs, I think that should be included with the House fact as well. And while I am on the subject of TV Shows... on Bones the character Booth uses a RAZR as well.

Prison Break

Both Kellerman and Mahone use RAZR cellphones, it can cleary be seen in the episode Rendezvous. Supposedly GPS enabled?

According to "Wireless Run Tracker", the Motorola RAZR is among those phones that are GPS enabled. It says to "Carry your GPS-enabled cell phone while you run and get real-time feedback on pace and distance". Deleted list of cultural references

The list of cultural references had gotten insanely long, with people reporting every appearance of the phone in every TV show and movie. I took the risk of deleting the whole list and replacing it with a short paragraph that highlights a few examples. This phone is so widely used that it's meaningless to report every one we see. I thought about shortening the list to 5-10 examples, but I have no idea how to choose the "best" examples. I propose that we don't add any references unless the RAZR was actually the topic of the show or episode, such as Oprah and Bono introducing the Product Red edition. Motorola RAZR V3a (CDMA Phone)

I've noticed a lack of a section for the Motorola V3a.

I'd be willing to throw up an article about them (having first hand experience with them as a Cellular Phone Salesman and Technician Apprentice), but I was wondering what the community in general thought about it. Would it be worth throwing up an article about? I'll have to do a bit of research (See what other carriers other then MetroPCS, where I work, carry it), but it'd be my first contribution to Wikipedia - and I'm looking kinda forward to it. Consensus?

Memory -- How much is there?

Influence on the Jaguar XF

I'm surprised that this has not been mentioned as Ian Callum publicly stated that the blue lights interior was inspired by mobile phone technology and the C-XF in particular is pure RAZR. Does anyone have any citations on this?
