[edit]With due respect for the original contributor, this article read like a machine translation from French source language (compare versions). I lived in France for many years as a municipal employee and I've done my best with it, but it may need more cleaning up and copy editing.Kudpung (talk) 11:54, 16 January 2009 (UTC)
- Thank you! When I'm feeling more clever, I'll translate as much as possible of the French article. ninety:one 00:42, 18 January 2009 (UTC)
Firearms
[edit]I'm not sure about this section: "The municipal police do not generally carry firearms. At the request of the mayor however, the prefect of the department in which the commune or municipality is located may authorise municipal police officers to be armed in certain circumstances or for special night work."
I have just returned from France, and while most municipal police officers do indeed appear to be unarmed, the Police Municipale of Caen all appear to be armed, not just "in certain circumstances". Every police officer I saw, on foot, bicycle or motorcycle, was carrying a sidearm. And these were definitely Police Municipale, not Police Nationale, since it was clearly written on their uniforms. Can anyone confirm this section? -- Necrothesp (talk) 13:12, 4 August 2009 (UTC)
Hi, in fact, most of the armed municipal police officers wear their revolvers (38SP) or automatics (7,65mm) permanently during their work. The national reglementation talks about "certain circumstances" for most of the real police work (interventions, patrols, ... ) but it depends of a political agreement beetween the prefect and the mayor about the work and armement of municipal police officers; in fact, an armed police officer is armed in every circumstances... It happens, but it's rare, some carry firearms the night only. Only 30% to 40% of the french municipal PO can carry firearms, especially on the south-east part(Provence and Riviera); the others carry spray and/or Tonfa. Some in the Calvados dep. like CAEN or CABOURG are armed but it's rare in Normandy. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Gaëtan1971 (talk • contribs) 11:45, 9 March 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks. I have added a clarification to the section. -- Necrothesp (talk) 12:45, 9 March 2010 (UTC)
Hi, since 2016, armed municipal officers can be issued with 9mm pistols like Glock 17, Sig P320 which are more modern and pratical to use than revolverss in .38 Special. Armed police officers are more commons on the south part of France, but some northern cities are allowed their municipal police officers to carry handguns (Levallois-Perret, Tours, Orleans). — Preceding unsigned comment added by 90.115.207.249 (talk) 23:56, 8 July 2020 (UTC)
