  • 1992 – Senior management team and Farmland Industries purchased Dodge City location. [1]

  • Wet Blue Leather

National Beef operates the largest wet blue tannery in the world.1 Wet blue tanning refers to the first step in processing raw and brine-cured hides into tanned leader. From this facility in St. Joseph, MO, National Beef provides processed hides to finished leather processors worldwide for use in the automotive, luxury goods, apparel and furniture industries.

  • Food Safety

National Beef uses the BioLogic Food Safety System, a fully integrated system that includes training employees, interventions, a zone system and control and assessment functions.2,8 The company has also adopted the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) audit criteria, a set of international food safety and quality standards. National Beef achieved accreditation through third party auditing by the British Retail Consortium (BRC). [17]

  • Philanthropy & Community Involvement

National Beef has donated or supported organizations in the communities where their business resides. They are a Community Partner to Lyric Opera of Kansas City9, a donor to Kansas Children’s Service League10, and a 2014 Sponsor of the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS)—an organization that provides peer-based emotional support, grief and trauma resources to those who have been affected by a death in the Armed Forces.11 The company also supported military troops by sponsoring food for a “Saluting Our Troops” event in Dodge City, KS.12 National Beef and its employees participate in United Way campaigns in both Seward County and Moultrie, GA through donations and food sponsorships.   • Controversies

Between the years of 1991 and 1994, several accidental and unrelated employee deaths occurred. The company faced legal prosecution and the cases were resolved in settlements. [21], [22], [23]

  • Recalls

In June 2013, the company recalled nearly 23,000 pounds of ground beef ground beef for a possible E. coli contamination. On August 1, 2013, the company recalled 50,000 pounds of ground beef products because of possible E. coli contamination. [24] [25] All recalls were voluntary, and no illnesses were reported. U.S. operations include Liberal, Dodge City[2] and Kansas City, Kan.; Brawley, Calif.; Hummels Wharf, Pa.; Moultrie, Ga.; St. Joseph, Mo., with a production facility and corporate headquarters in Kansas City, Mo.[1]

Prior to National Beef Packing Company’s current ownership, between the years of 1991 and 1994, several accidental and unrelated employee deaths occurred.   1. The upfront paragraph and the last bullet in the History section simply state that National Beef was acquired by Marfrig – which is incorrect. (Marfrig acquired a 51% stake, which is reflected accurately in the infobox.) For better clarity, I’d argue to revise both points in the upfront and History section to read, “Brazil’s Marfrig purchased a 51 percent majority stake in the company in April 2018 for $969 million.” The Reuters source used for the current statement in the upfront (Reference 2) still accurately reflects the new sentence.
  2. National Beef refers to each of its product departments (beef, wet blue leather, direct to consumer products) as “Business Segments,” so I’d argue to rename the “Products” section to “Business Segments.”[1][2]
  3. Revise the Sales & Operations section to include the following new information:
    • Change the first sentence to read, “National Beef is the nation’s fourth largest beef processor with sales of $7.4 billion in 2017."[3]
    • Along with the towns with U.S. operations (Liberal, Dodge City, etc.), add at the end of the section that “National Beef maintains international offices in Chicago, Illinois; Tokyo, Japan; Seoul, South Korea; and Hong Kong, Hong Kong.”[4]
  4. Add the following information about its business segments to either the upfront paragraph or to a new upfront paragraph under the Products/Business Segments section:

History

Propose the addition of the following two milestones in the company’s history, which would be added to the bottom of the existing list:

  • 2018 – Through Marfrig’s purchase of the majority stake in National Beef, a beef patty processing plant located in North Baltimore, Ohio, was added to National Beef’s portfolio.[1]
  • 2019 – National Beef acquired Iowa Premium, LLC, in Tama, Iowa. The acquisition added an additional 1,100 head per day of packing capacity for National Beef.[2]

Products

Under the Branded Box Beef section, National Beef no longer offers Certified Premium Beef brand. However, the company did introduce HyPlains Heritage Farms brand in 2018. Propose updating the Branded Box Beef section to read as follows (updated copy in bold, sourcing included below):

National Beef has a variety of programs for a variety of beef needs including natural, Angus brands, and specialty brands such as Black Canyon Angus Beef, NatureSource Natural Beef and HyPlains Heritage Farms.[3]

 Not done I'm declining to add the disputed sentence because the source doesn't say that the acquisition will add 10k head to National Beef's capacity: mergers and acquisition are often more complex than that. It seems a lot of history is left out.

Liberal, Kansas based National Beef was operating in the 1970s. As an owner-operator trucker, I leased on to National Carriers, a subsidiary of National Beef, in January of 1977.
