I've just deleted the folk pronouncation STOO-wihh for [stuwix]. Please don't use them. They're rarely accurate since English spelling simply doesn't have the means to represent most of the sounds of the world's languages, and there isn't any real standard for them. The result is that they don't convey much information. Even people unfamiliar with the International Phonetic Alphabet will generally be able to get an idea of what something sounds like from its IPA transcription, and if they wish to learn more, they easily can. Folk transcriptions like this don't add anything and look unprofessional.Bill 06:37, 19 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

So little is known of the language that beyond the fact that it is Athabascan it cannot be classified. Some linguists have suggested that it is merely a displaced dialect of Chilcotin, but the evidence is too skimpy to allow a decision.

There's a long passage in Mark S. Wade's The Thompson Country about their arrival and first appearance at Spences Bridge; he may be pulling that from Teit, I don't know; link is on Thompson Country in the refs to that book; I don't think he (Wade) says anything about a Chilcotin connection; I do remember something about them "moving south to get away from bad neighbours" which is certainly suggestive given other known events in that period (Chinlac, the Tsilhqot'in-St'at'imc War etc.); maybe a quote or paraphrase about their appearance/origin would fit on the end of that pragraph? Not to draw conclusions or to even be suggestive, just to indicate why the Chilcotin language connection was made by some linguists; if that's why they made it; I'm about to split the Nicola people article to give Nicola Athapaskans a separate article from today's people, whose usage is the primary one (though not to linguists, I suppose); I figure that's hte best title rather than the Nlaka'pamux stuwix; if you have any other suggestions please advise.Skookum1 (talk) 15:26, 28 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Mount Chopaka?

[edit]

Somewhere in Teit or another account there's a placename or two supposedly from Stuwix; something tells me Chopaka is one but maybe that's Okanagan, as it's down in the Similkameen/Penticton area; somewhere around Merritt/Aspen Grove aren't there some names that could be mentioned here? I don't have anything like a good source for that, just an idea for article-enrichment.Skookum1 (talk) 15:26, 28 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
