Is it a sports helmet?

[edit]

The article states that "[s]everal other Roman sports helmets have also been found in or near Nijmegen." The implication is that the item is a sports helmet, but this is contradicted elsewhere in the same article: "The helmet would have been worn by the elite Roman cavalry". Urgos, it's a cavalry sports helmet, i.e., a helmet worn by a member of the cavalry during tournaments. See Hippika gymnasia. The Emesa helmet is of the same type (and there's a longer discussion there), although that one is probably too ornate to have been used during tournaments. --Usernameunique (talk) 06:30, 13 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the clarification. Urgos (talk) 20:49, 19 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Any idea what this source is?

[edit]

In searching for sources on this helmet, I came across this: seemingly a pamphlet issued about the helmet, in both Dutch and German. The yumpu page mentions "www.rheinisches-landesmuseum.de", and the pamphlet itself mentions (in the bottom margin) the Valkhof Museum and Landschaftsverband Rheinland [de]. There also seems to be a significant relationship between the pamphlet and this book published by the museum, also in Dutch and German, and also with the same titles.

I'm guessing that this is a pamphlet produced for a museum audience (possibly in conjunction with an exhibition), and likely stripped down from the book. But it would be nice to fully place it. --Usernameunique (talk) 06:37, 26 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
