In a late 2001 edition of Granma, Norberto Abreu is identified as an eighty-year-old man while he is credited as a World War II naval hero and as the helmsman of the boat. I can thus assign him a birthyear of 1921 -- on the assumption that the age is correct.
Granma may be a propaganda rag, but it has no cause to get his age wrong.
