The Operational Research SocietyOperational Research Society – I have already moved the article once, but it was reverted with the comment on my talkpage: "Hi, I reverted your move. "The" is an official part of the name and should therefore be in the title of the article (see WP:DEFINITE and WP:THE)." However, despite the reverter's claims, the naming conventions do not actually say what he appears to think they say. They quite clearly state that "The" should only be included if commonly capitalised in running text, whether an "official" name or not. In this instance, as in most others, it is not. The ORS do not generally capitalise the definite article even on their own website. Note especially the bottom of the frontpage: "The OR Society is a trading name of the Operational Research Society". -- Necrothesp (talk) 08:11, 28 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

  • Question - So to get this straight you are saying that this "organization's" name includes "The" just like The Hershey Company, but would not be capitalized in running text, so we should not include the article "the" in the title? I can't seem to find any place other than the company's site showing this usage, but am unfamiliar with the subject.--ZooFamily (talk) 00:59, 1 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
    • Yes, that's right. Many organisations include "The" as part of their title. Mostly we omit it in article titles as specified in the naming conventions. -- Necrothesp (talk) 21:27, 1 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support I think a good rule of thumb for WP:THE is "If in doubt, don't include 'the.'" And there's no real evidence that it's needed here. Usage on the organization's own website is inconsistent. I see "Welcome to the OR Society," "Website design and build by... the OR Society," "About the OR Society," and "The OR Society is a trading name of the Operational Research Society." I see one instance of "The OR Society" in running text, but this seems to be the minority usage. --BDD (talk) 16:38, 5 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Archive catalogue[edit]

User:Randykitty has once again deleted the link to the catalogue of the ORS's archives with the mysterious justification: "dead link and akso WP:ELNO #9". Mysterious because (a) this is most certainly not a dead link (I've just tested it) and (b) WP:ELNO#9 says links should not be included if they are to: "Any search results pages, such as links to individual website searches, search engines, search aggregators, or RSS feeds." Maybe user:Randykitty would care to explain how on earth the archives of the organisation which is the subject of this article fall into this category, why the organisation's archives are not relevant to the article (I should have thought archives were exceptionally relevant, but then, I'm an archivist!), and what his/her objection to this link really is? -- Necrothesp (talk) 16:28, 20 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
