Etymology in lead

[edit]

The current lead reads "Ordu (pronunciation:/'oɾdu/), Turkish for 'army', is a port city..." It doesn't seem necessary to include the translation of 'ordu' in the lead. We don't, after all, write "Naples (from Greek Νεάπολις 'new town')..." or "Kadıköy, Turkish for 'judge's village'...". The etymology of placenames is certainly interesting, but can be placed in its own section. --Macrakis (talk) 13:24, 1 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

A most excellent idea- the inclusion of place name meanings would be a welcome addition those (and other) articles... and would, in my estimation, be of broader usefulness than the atypical addition of IPA notation. I wouldn't use the possessive when translating "Kadıköy" (eg: Willow's Creek/Willow Creek); doesn't 'kadı' refer to an Islamic judge (as apposed to a 'yargıç')? My Turkish isn't all that well honed.--Mavigogun (talk) 14:30, 1 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The etymology of placenames is fascinating, but not basic or central to the topic -- which is what the lead should focus on. Knowing how to pronounce a name on the other hand seems like basic information. --Macrakis (talk) 17:13, 1 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I felt the same way about the inclusion of pronunciation- but deemed my assessment sufficiently subjective to leave it for others to consider. Three words in the lead (which is itself brief) poses no burden. In my estimation, the meaning of the name is central. The etymology (history of word origin and morphology) is a separate mater and is located in the appropriate section- and I do not suggest including it in the lead in this case.--Mavigogun (talk) 19:20, 1 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The name just means 'Army'.

New district

[edit]

Hi! Capital district of Ordu Province is called as "Altınordu" anymore (you can see it here). Ordu was remained the name of province only. Can you change its name please? *** Эɱ®εč¡κ *** ...and his friends 09:36, 17 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
