Tierney's age in 2009

[edit]

An anonymous 155.97.8.198 changed Tierney's age here to 97. Geolocate identifies this IP-address at Salt Lake City and the University of Utah, so presumably the edit was credible but unsourced.

However, according to this, Tierney was awarded the Order of the Rising Sun in 2007 at the age 93. So, he would be 95 this year -- not 97. No more specific information is readily available in a Google search. Hope this helps. --Tenmei (talk) 15:46, 4 September 2009

Original research

[edit]

Mudman57 -- The following paragraph was a pleasure to read; but since the sentences represent only your opinion, it contravenes wiki-policy -- see, e.g., WP:NOR. If it were possible to find an opinion with a published provenance, this awkward hurdle could be surmounted.

"While at the University of Utah, he taught several classes on Oriental art. His general knowledge and incredible optimism, influenced several students to pursue a career in Oriental art. In class he was always light-hearted and invoked a desire to learn more about art history. He included such subjects as tantric and erotic art in his classes, but warned people of the nature of his lecture prior to class. The class in classical Indian art was filled, when he discussed the classic period with slides. He often quipped, yes these men were gods for a reason. Most if not all the the slides in his classes were taken by him. He is well traveled and well read."

Some suggestions come to mind:

  • Perhaps the university or his department published something on-point?
  • What about newspaper articles which may have accompanied his retirement?
  • The one sentence which is marked in bold green might be supported by something published by the university library? published by the art gallery? As you may know, the University of Utah's Marriott Library today holds close to 75,000 photographs taken by Tierney – all related to the art and architecture of the Far East, Southeast Asia, and especially Japan.<:ref>University of Utah: Lennox Tierney Collection, PO479.</ref>

This illustrates a problem contemplated by WP:V. In other words,

"The threshold for inclusion in Wikipedia is verifiability, not truth – that is, whether readers are able to check that material added to Wikipedia has already been published by a reliable source, not whether we think know it is true.

I don't want to seem discouraging; but there you have it. --Tenmei (talk) 04:56, 29 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
