I don't think that the mention of Pine Rest is appropriate for this entry. It has absolutely nothing to do with Mr. De Vries and serves only as an "advertisement" for Pine Rest. For that reason, I removed the reference.

Dune Character[edit]

Question: Is one of Frank Herbert's Dune character named after him?

I think that it's not a confirmed idea... I'm not entirely sure of the rules on this yet, but would that be added as trivia? -LetterAfterZ 13:33, 12 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Unless there is some verification in Herbert's writings that the name of the author inspired that of the character, I would call this a coincedence, not noteable, and unnecessary to mention here. The character is Piter, not Peter, in any case. Caliban93 (talk) 00:10, 13 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The citation of "Reformed Church in America" isn't entirely correct. Due to the fact that he was educated in the Christian schools of the Dutch Reformed Church, the citation should really be "Christian Reformed Church," since one of the (minor) differences between these two denominations is the focus on Christian education. The CRC believes strongly in Christian education; while for the Reformed Church in America the focus on Christian education is simply not there. For that reason, I changed the citation.

Military service?[edit]

I've added a couple sentences about De Vries being a U.S. Marine Captain in WW 2 and serving with the OSS (predecessor of the CIA). Information about his time in the military is sketchy, but I had at least one good source so at least for now I put it into the article. Other dates/years from the Wiki and other sources might seem to contradict him being in the service, or if so not for very long, so I'm kind of stumped. Considering De Vries penchant for satire and humor I suppose it is a possibility that he made up the Marine / OSS stuff and fed it to the media as a joke. Any help on this greatly appreciated, whether it proves to be true or false, just so we know and are accurate. Thanks & have a great Wiki kind of day.    I've removed mention of military service from the article. Though not a high profile figure, as editor of Poetry magazine he was sometimes mentioned in contemporary newspaper articles, which account for his time prior to August 1944. When he joined The New Yorker that month, the Chicago Tribune reported that he and his wife would spend three weeks in New York and one week in Chicago out of every month since there was no replacement for him yet at Poetry. It seems unlikely there was time for him to also be in Washington DC. His obituary also makes no mention of military service. The name "Peter De Vries" was not uncommon in some areas of the country: Chicago alone had at least three people with that name born between 1910 and 1914.---Saratoga Sam (talk) 17:26, 9 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
