The Posterior Tibial Artery[edit]

This is the larger terminal branch of the Popliteal Artery.Apart from the back of the leg,its branches also suppy the lateral compartment of the leg and the sole of the foot. It begins at the lower border of the Politeus muscle,(which is a triangular shaped deep muscle situated in the posterior compartment of the leg)and passes between the tibia and fibula,deep to the gastrocnemius. It enters the back of the leg by passing deep to the tendinous arch of the Soleus muscle. In the leg it runs downwards and slightly medially,to reach midway between the medial malleolus(of the Tibia)and the Calcaneum. It terminates by dividing into thr Lateral and Medial Plantar Arteries.

BRANCHES OF THE POSTERIOR TIBIAL ARTERY

1.The Peroneal Artery is the largest branch of the Posterior Tibial Artery.

2.A Nutrient Artery given off to the Tibia.

3.The Anastomotic Branches include the following,\

a)The Circumflex Fibular Branch

b)A Communicating Branch

c)Calcacean branches

d)A Malleolar branch

4.Several Muscular branches are given off to muscles at the back of the leg

5.Terminal Branches which are the medial and lateral plantar arteries.

CLINICAL IMPORTANCE

The posterior tibial pulse can be felt against the calcaneum about 2 cm below and behind the medial malleolus.
