United Kingdom

[edit]

I think that it is necessary to mention the fact that Prestwick is located within the United Kingdom in the opening line of the article, primarily because Prestwick is currently located within the sovereign unitary state of the United Kingdom which is currently, whether you find it politically controversial or not, the primary legislative power for this area above the Scottish Parliament. This is political fact and would be in line with articles such as Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen and Dundee. Brythones (talk) 13:53, 24 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

If any reader doesn't know this, following the link to Scotland explains all. However, most readers probably already know this and don't need it spelt out. We also shouldn't assume that the reader is interested enough in the legislative power hierarchy that it needs to appear in the lead sentence. The rest of the sentence is more concerned with the geography.
In the same way, we wouldn't generally follow United Kingdom with European Union (which is currently, whether you find it politically controversial or not, the primary legislative power for this area above the UK Parliament).
The articles you compare with don't back you up.
  • Edinburgh - UK not mentioned in lead sentence
  • Glasgow - mentioned only in ranking the city within the UK
  • Aberdeen - mentioned only in ranking the city within the UK
  • Dundee - mentioned only in ranking the city within the UK
I suspect that Prestwick's UK ranking doesn't merit any mention.

The South Ayrshire article leads onto Ayrshire, which leads onto Scotland: should we therefore exclude Ayrshire and Scotland from the opening line of the article under the assumption that everyone already knows this? In the case of Edinburgh, the United Kingdom is mentioned in the opening section of the article.
The United Kingdom Parliament is the primary legislator for this area above both Scottish and European Parliaments as the United Kingdom is a unitary state. It is a political fact that the United Kingdom is an independent sovereign unitary state. The European Union is an international organisation which the United Kingdom is currently a member of (as it is a member of other international organisations such as the Commonwealth Nations and NATO). That membership is strictly subject to the United Kingdom Parliament. Brythones (talk) 16:11, 24 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
"should we therefore exclude Ayrshire and Scotland from the opening line of the article under the assumption that everyone already knows this?" - No. Ayrshire is far less known than Scotland.
"In the case of Edinburgh, the United Kingdom is mentioned in the opening section of the article." - Again, in relation to its size. Do you think this is a notable fact about Prestwick? So notable that it needs to be in the lead? I don't think it is.
"The United Kingdom Parliament is the primary legislator for this area... etc.. etc.." Again, I doubt this is the most significant information that needs to be in the lead. Do you think this is one of the first things people need to know about Prestwick? Or are they likely to A) already know it, or B)Infer it, or C) follow the wiki links to find it out if it is important to them, or D) Read about it under the appropriate section of the article ? --Escape Orbit (Talk) 12:16, 25 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
And by that same logic having Scotland in the opening line of the article is unnecessary. Jellyman has convinced me as to why the opening line is fine on the Troon talk page. Brythones (talk) 14:58, 25 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
