Untitled[edit]

Tides of History: The Pacific Islands in the Twentieth Century (p.73) refers to Prime Minister S. T. Mateialona as "John Mateialona". That being the case, I assume "S." stands for "Sione", the Tongan equivalent to "John". Unfortunately, there's no other information about him, other than the fact that he was the first prime minister following Tupou II's signing of the 1905 agreement. He seems to have been a puppet of the British to some extent, allowing the British consul to wield effective political power. The book says that the government was stacked with members of the nobility opposed to the King, so presumably Mateialona was one of them. Aridd (talk) 15:53, 4 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
