RajaRam Sharma is recognised as an Indian Pichwai and Miniature artist of Nathdwara /Rajasthan. He is accomplished in the traditional Devotional theme based miniature paintings well known as Pichwais. He has developed his unique style that has contributed significantly to both traditional and contemporary Indian art. The artist sees himself as an observer and critic too. He developed a close kinship with the paintings as a young child. The kinship is the basis for his art in which Lord Krishna’s Lilas are depicted in paintings. His paintings mark a conscious return to a more traditional style of representation. He is intimate , scared and fantastical. He is working independently on Pichwai and Miniature Paintings at Udaipur. He keeps experimenting traditional and modern styles to produce an examplary piece of art.We can see the use of traditional colours (stone colour, mineral colour, vegetable colour , Gold and Silver colour)in the new era style paintings by him.

Early Life

Born on 9thJune1963 to Sh. Durga Lal Sharma who was a famous Glyptic artist of his own time in Bijoliya village, District Bhilwara, Rajasthan. RajaRam Sharma spent his childhood while watching the art practice at home by his father. As a child he was the most efficient child among his 5 siblings. He completed his early education at his ancestral village, then at the age of 13, he came to Nathdwara with his Guru Mr. Tulsidas ji who was head of Shree Nath Ji temple. Mr. Tulsidas Ji brought RajaRam with him to teach the art because he belongs to The Aadi Gaud Brahmin Society. There is a tradition to teach and train the artist of the “Aadi gaud Sect. “And it is still in the culture. There he started learning “The Nathdwara Pichwai Painting” Art in 1976 under Sh. Tulsidas Chitrakar S/O Yamuna Das Ji known as Mukhiya Ji(The Head) of Nathdwara. He believes in India’s ancient tradition of teacher -disciple linage.In the parampara(Linage) system knowledge (in any field) is believed to be passed down through successive generations and this is the tradition of Nathdwara also. The student eventually masters the knowledge that the guru embodies.RajaRam Sharma spent 13 years at Nathdwara with his guru ji’s family while learning . His efficiency made all the senior artists to praise him and to teach him.

In 1989, after seeing the  quality of the artist’s work ;the famous and accomplished painter B.G. Sharma(5 August 1924 -14 th November 2007)) took RajaRam Sharma with him to practice miniature art under him. Here the artist worked for 10 years and became  adept in Pichwai and  miniature paintings. It was a great challenge to prove himself among number of artists around him. His first attempt of displaying the Miniature  Contemporary Painting in an exhibition for earthquake victims(2001) was rejected by the modern artists but somehow it was displayed  and the only sold painting in that exhibition. It was the turning point of the artist’s life.He never looks back after that and became famous as  Miniature Contemporary Artist too. Earlier he was known for traditional Pichwai Paintings only. This incident opened a new field for the artist. 

Family

The artist got married at the age of 22 to Chhaya Sharma,the daughter of Sh. Vishnu Kumar Sharma S/o Sh. Bhura Lal Sharma(Well Known Pichwai artist) of Nathdwara. The artist’s wife is playing an important role in his life. She is the backbone of his work. The artist is blessed with two daughters(Swati Sharma and Jyoti Sharma ) and a son( Rajat Sharma). Rajat Sharma is pursuing his Post Graduation in Paintings and already practicing miniature and contemporary art with his father.

Present

Currently the artist is practicing miniature paintings at his own Studio named “Chitrashala” at Udaipur. The artist is mentor to many. PhD scholars and many other researchers from the various colleges and universities of India and abroad visit him to seek his guidance and work. Every seeker of knowledge is always welcomed by him. He has influenced and inspired many other artists and the scholars too. At “Chitrashala” the artist is serving as an instructor to the new upcoming artists. The artist is a “Pioneer” in modern Indian art.

Achievments/Awards

He has received many awards which are listed below:

1998 : Specially Honored by Education Minister on 15th August for the Field of Painting.

1998 : First Prize in District Handicraft Contest, Udaipur (Raj.)

2001 : All India Award of Traditional & Folk Art, SZCC, Nagpur.

2001 : All India Special Award of Traditional Art, T.A.H.S., Karnataka.

2002 : Gold Medal in Traditional Painting at All India Art Exhibition, Jangaon Dist. Warangal (A.P.)

2004 : All India Award of Traditional Art, Kalidas Academy, Ujjain (M.P.)

2016 : National Award Hastshilp (Merit Award)Vikas Ministry Bharat Govt.
