A question

[edit]

If this was done from 1935 on, and the Principal Triangulation had been performed between 1783 and 1853, then what where the cartographersdoing surveying a hill/mountain in Wales as the main plot line in the 1995 Hugh Grant movie The Englishman Who Went Up a Hill But Came Down a Mountain. imdb plot summary. Yes I know that it's only a movie, but I assume that there was probably some reason for surveying Wales at that time. BlankVerse 11:36, 27 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Deliberate error in the Retriangulation

[edit]

Using the current ETRS lat-lons we calculate Great Britain's length to be 20+ meters more, Land's End to Duncansey Head, than it was based on OSGB36 lat-lons. As I recall this error was deliberate-- they slightly distorted the Retriangulation to make it fit eleven stations of the original triangulation. That should be included in this article; the explanation must be in the History somewhere, but I don't have that handy. Anybody find the relevant section so we can source it?
