Superfopp, your constant re-writing of pages purely for the sake of it is just creating unnecessary work. However, here's why I'm making the following changes,

  • 1, The start of the War of Independence is a matter of considerable debate and there is no need for this article to go into it.
  • 2, The RIC didn't "flee" their rural barracks, they abandoned or evacuated the smaller ones in rural areas (2-3 policemen) as a matter of policy.
  • 3, 'ambush' does not take a capital letter
  • 4, What is the difference between "killed instantly" and "killed outright"? Or "shot dead" and "shot and killed"? What was the point of making these changes?
  • 5, There is no need for IRA men to be called "volunteers" at every mention. This is not done in the sources.
  • 6, This was not a 'battle', which is a very large enegament, so "action" is more appropriate.
  • 7, "Shortly after" is not the same as "immediately afterwards - ie right after.
  • 8, This "A separate RIC raid in Ennistymon, in which several homes and businesses were burned. In this raid they killed Tom Connole, the secretary of the local ITGWU trade union, and burned his home. PJ Linnane, a 15-year-old boy, was also shot dead by the police", makes no sense grammatically and has to be reverted.

I really have to ask why you do these re-wordings constantly? I'm not trying to be rude here, but going to into an article and changing the wording without explanation (or apparent point) is not often helpful. Jdorney (talk) 21:00, 27 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Most of the edits are/were merely fixing grammar or making sentences more straightforward and easier to read — that goes for points 3, 4 and 8. That was also my reason for the changes in points 2 and 7, but you've since shown that those two weren't needed.
Also, I wasn't aware there was any debate over "when the War began". The main article and numerous sources say that it began in January 1919...? ~Asarlaí 21:22, 27 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Ifyou want to see a sample of the debate on the war's start, you should read the talk page of the main article. Re the grammar is was not wrong to begin with, nor was it difficult to read. So why the constant minor changes? Jdorney (talk) 22:07, 27 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Dead of Alan Lendrum

[edit]

Please read source 8 ([1]) about the circumstances of his death. The source states: The car was taken a mile further on and the wounded man was taken to an outhouse in a field nearby where he died that evening. In the meantime the car was secreted eight miles further on. The body was weighed down and sunk off low-water the same night. Pádraig Óg Ó Ruairc, the write of that article also states: Even though the British Military inquest had established that Lendrum had died of gunshot wounds members of the R.I.C. in Clare spread an alternative version of events and claimed that Lendrum had died of drowning. According to Fr. Pat Gaynor a priest in the area; “After a subsequent autopsy, the police claimed that he had been buried while still alive: that death was due to drowning.”6 (In my book “Blood On the Banner. The Republican Struggle in Clare. Mercier Press. Cork 2009 I mistakenly attributed the ultimate cause of Lendrums death to drowning when the I.R.A. disposed of his body instead of his gunshot wounds. This Factual error will be corrected in any further editions of the work.)

So claiming that Lendrum died from drowning is incorrect. The Banner talk 08:32, 17 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
