fire and photos

[edit]

The Library and archives have photos of the fire and the demolition, and date both to 1927. See [1], [2], [3], [4], [5], and [6]. Lupo 10:21, 28 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The shoebox article is now archived, but it did say the fire was in 1928. However, I'm more willing to believe the multiple archive pages, and have thus changed the date. - SimonP 16:22, 28 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I was pretty convinced the Russell Theatre was destroyed April 14, 1928, but if you google the date and the theatre, it says that the hotel and theatre were destroyed then. Woods, 1980, said "Prior to 1937 the square had been enlarged by the removal of Bate's warehouse, the ruins of City Hall (burnt in 1931), the ruins of the Russell Hotel (burnt in 1928), and Knox Presbyterian Church." Yes, Woods has lots of errors in his book, especially with dates, but it is backed up by the definitive confederation square article (Ottawa Citizen, May 12, 1939): http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=2194&dat=19390512&id=PY0vAAAAIBAJ&sjid=6tsFAAAAIBAJ&pg=5313,1376049 and http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=2194&dat=19560706&id=ncgxAAAAIBAJ&sjid=HuMFAAAAIBAJ&pg=7222,1030637
