Use of "SIUE Cougars" vs. "SIU Edwardsville Cougars"

[edit]

I have let WikiProject College football, WikiProject College basketball and WikiProject College baseball know about this discussion. Jrcla2 (talk) 04:53, 17 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

SIU Edwardsville Cougars: Precedent at Talk:Louisiana–Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns#Requested move (2011), in which cmadler argued successfully that the name most common in reliable national sources carries more weight than the school's self-reference. In this case, reliable national sources include the following: ESPN.com: SIU-Edwardsville Cougars, SI.com: SIU Edwardsville Cougars, and FoxSports.com: SIU Edwardsville Cougars.
There are 9 other Wikipedia articles with "SIUE" in the title, which is why it really did make sense for Illinois2011 to change this one. I can see your point in making it "SIU Edwardsville", but it really is inconsistent with the other SIUE pieces... GWFrog (talk) 23:01, 17 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

While I strongly disagree with this decision, I'm not going to sit here and argue with Wikipedia precedent. However, I am concerned about how others moved this article without concern for things like links to this article and fair use rationale for images. It would have been a shame had we lost the logo over this. I think in time as SIUE rises in national prominence, this article will be moved back to SIUE Cougars. It's not like "Edwardsville" is any more descriptive, really. No one knows where Edwardsville is.... Illinois2011 (talk) 06:23, 18 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

A) I may be a bit biased, in that I not only attended SIUE, but I also largely rewrote the SIUE Cougars article, with input from the University's Sports Information Office. B) The school has referred to itself over the years as S.I.U. @ Edwardsville, SIU-Edwardsville, and now SIU Edwardsville, but there has long been a locally familiar referral to the school as SIU-E or SIUE. C) Any way you look at it, SIUE is a whole lot easier to say or write than Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. For this reason alone, I have long put "SIUE" in the same category as "UCLA" and "UNLV". GWFrog (talk) 03:44, 29 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
As of June 2017, Fox Sports is consistent about using SIUE, probably due largely to their carrying SIUE men's basketball since 2012–13 and being the primary carrier since 2013–14. ESPN now uses SIUE much more often than not, although they do still occasionally use SIU Edwardsville, especially for basketball scores. National publications concerned with individual sports (such as basketball, softball, track, or wrestling) seem to all consistently use SIUE, although a first mention in a story may be, "SIU Edwardsville (SIUE)" with SIUE used subsequently. (On a humorous note: The Ohio Valley Conference's main tournament basketball broadcast announcer finally figured out [after the school has been in the conference since 2011] that it's NOT SEIU/South Eastern Illinois University, and it's NOT located in Evansville or Evanston.) Google SIU Edwardsville = About 379,000 results (0.80 seconds); Southern Illinois University Edwarsville= About 432,000 results (0.91 seconds); SIUE= About 7,970,000 results (0.75 seconds).... GWFrog (talk) 01:31, 29 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
