Clayarch Museum Controversy[edit]

I invested considerable time trying to understand what Shin Sang-ho said about his tenure as art director at the Clayarch. This is what I wrote and later removed from the page to this talk section. Whatever happened at the Clayarch in 2008 seems to have led to his early resignation from the post or his dismissal and a period of 10 year depression. I am conflicted about inclusion on the page since:

  • It is based upon an interview with the artist
  • A 10 year period of what seems to be a major depression is a rather important topic
  • The artist didn't come right out and say what caused the depression
  • The Board of Audit and Inspection is pretty serious body to have investigated the matter.
  • Google searches that mentioned this audit yielded nothing.
  • On the other a careful reading of his interview coupled with a little commonsense makes it pretty clear what transpired.
  • He appears to have taken the matter very personally and had a major falling out with the Clayarch and then current mayor of the city of Gimhae.

What I am hoping for is either additional confirmation of what transpired at the Clayarch, and/or additional input from other Wikipedia editors. What do you think?

Questions were raised since Shin Sang-ho acted as both a consultant on the exterior of the building as well as a supplier. These factors led to a review by Korea's Board of Audit and Inspection.[1] Owing to a lack any newspaper accounts of this audit, it appears Shin's claims that the audit found no impropriety are true. Between November 2007 and March 30th, 2008 while Shin was serving as its Artistic Director, the museum hosted an exhibition of Shin's divided into three themes: Dream of Africa; Structure · Force; and Fired Painting. Again, no newspaper accounts document this as being a problem. However, this exhibition appears to have caused political fallout and 2008 was the last year that Shin served as the museum's Artistic Director.

Shin returned to his studio and entered what appears to be a ten year period of depression. “I lived without meeting anyone to the point where I forgot to talk." In an interview conducted in 2022 with the artist, Shin said he was not interested in going back to the museum despite the fact the mayor of Gimhae had changed.
