What does "solid state" mean?[edit]

With or without hyphen?[edit]

What is the correct spelling of the term? (Solid-State Physics) OR (Solid State Physics)? The article uses both spellings with and without hyphen on random occasion. I am not a native speaker so I do not want to judge, but it seems to me that the version without hyphen is more common. It should be consistently spelled throughout the article. Condensed matter physics[edit]

There exist both a page on condensed matter physics (CMP) and this one, on solid state physics (SSP). The term CMP was proposed by PW Anderson, to include also fluids (and superfluids). So the two terms are not strictly coincident. But the present developing Wikipedia pages are mostly coincident.

A concerted effort would be most welcome. For instance the present page could say that SSP has been the name of a prominent field of physics until the '80s, when the more general term of CMP took over. A shrinked version o SSP could remain, with the present content restricted to a minimum and a clear redirection, for more details to the CMP page.

I am not a Wikipedia Editor. This purpose, if agreed upon, could be explicitly written out in a temporary top warning box in both pages. RDR (talk) 14:36, 2 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
