Mental Breaks in space

[edit]

There have been other mental breaks and psychological problems in space missions and even in the Russian Mars simulation. It is a common but little known problem of human physiology. Mental breaks have happened on scientific expeditions for over a hundred years. Admiral Byrd took 12 straight jackets but only one casket on his expeditions. The most famous was the Belgian Polar Expedition of 1898.

Poor quality team members from local populations and ship's crews have been blamed but the mental events are now happening to well educated, highly trained Astronauts and Cosmonauts.

The Russian space agency gave 12 possible reasons for this mental break but all of them would have effected both crew members equally. The venting of the capsule was a precaution. No evidence was ever found. If it was a fuel leak to the living area it would have continued with the next crew even though the air was vented and replaced. That didn't happen!

There is no information or test results that show the "odor" was anything but a hallucination.

Nothing like the flight engineer's psychotic break had happened to previous crews that used the same photo chemicals and capsule hardware.

Buzz Aldrin said his problems began after he left the Moon return isolation unit in Houston. He has not replied to my request for an email interview.

The conditions in the capsule replicated the conditions where Subliminal Distraction was discovered to cause mental breaks for knowledge workers in business offices in 1964. Each crew member's exposure would be different due to the random nature of their duties that would have allowed Subliminal Distraction exposure.

Both Aldrin's book, "Return to Earth." and Dr. Cook's book, "Through the First Antarctic Night" are reviewed and quoted on my site.

This is not a theory or something I dreamed up. It is a known problem in design for over forty years.
