Demolished minaret

[edit]

It's clear from recent videos on social media and from satellite imagery on Google Earth that the minaret of this complex, which stood slightly northwest of the domed mausoleums, has been demolished or dismantled by the government. This news report states that "Two 700-year-old minarets on the list that are in the path of the roadwork are being dismantled and moved to another location", but without naming the specific monuments concerned. This most likely refers to the Sultaniyya minaret and the nearby minaret of Qawsun's mausoleum.

I would be grateful if someone could find any reliable soruces with more details about the demolitions (we may need to look in Arabic sources). Keep in mind that we may need non-governmental sources. E.g. the government seems to have denied demolishing the Qawsun minaret in August 2023 ([1]), but that's clearly misleading since this minaret is now also missing from satellite imagery. Follow-up: it looks like the original AP news source confirms that this particular minaret was dismantled. I've added it to the article ([2]). R Prazeres (talk) 22:55, 5 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
