Splitting this page out

[edit]

I'm just going to copy across what I wrote last year about the 2009 article, and which wasn't disputed then...

I am really concerned about the fact that the Melodifestivalen 2009 and Sweden in the Eurovision Song Contest 2009 pages have been merged. I understand fully why this was done, presumably in order to ensure uniformity amongst "x in the Eurovision Song Contest xxxx" pages. I agree that for most countries it would be appropriate, but I feel quite strongly that for Melodifestivalen it's inappropriate.

Put simply, Melodifestivalen is bigger in Sweden than Eurovision is. There's a reason why it's called "The Melody Festival". It attracts a larger audience (the largest TV audience in Sweden every year - i.e. it probably outstrips comfortably most X Factor/Pop Idol type shows), and unlike most other countries it is (I believe) watched by quite a lot of people with no real interest in Eurovision. Melodifestivalen entries literally dominate the Swedish singles chart for weeks. Winning Melodifestivalen has its own prestige and status amongst the Swedish public, unconnected with the fact that the winner subsequently goes to Eurovision. Increasingly a number of the entrants are entering Melodifestivalen purely for the domestic exposure, with the aim of reaching the final but with the possibility of actually going to Eurovision being an afterthought at best.

I feel that subsuming Melodifestivalen into "Sweden in the Eurovision Song Contest" fails to reflect any of this and should therefore be reversed. I think this is much more important than enforcing a misleading uniformity between Melodifestivalen and other national selection procedures which, unlike Melodifestivalen, are often basically non-notable in themselves and aren't widely considered to have much intrinsic interest other than as the means to the end of picking the Eurovision entrant. I agree. The articles should both exist like the case is for 2009. The format of the Melodifestivalen 2009 article is also a perfect template for the Melodifestivalen 2010 article. The Sweden in the Eurovision Song Contest 2010 article should just give a brief description of how the Swedish entry was selected and what songs competed in the Melodifestivalen final and then focus on the Swedish performance in the ESC. – Starylon (talk) 12:12, 14 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
As the main author of the Melodifestivalen 2009 article I agree that in the long run the two pages should diverge. However I feel that this should only happen after the contest has finished because I don't feel that at the moment there is enough material to justify a separate article. Sims2aholic8 (Michael) (talk) 15:00, 14 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
In that case, Sweden in the Eurovision Song Contest 2010 should redirect to Melodifestivalen 2010, not the other way round, as whether there's one article or two my arguments still stand. Cmch83 (talk) 18:39, 18 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I still don't feel that it should deserve its own article yet. Untimately, although the contest is one of the the biggest things in Swedish television, it is still another selection process for Eurovision, and has been since its foundation. Until there is substantial information (which won't exist until the contest finishes) I don't believe it should be created. When the information does become available I will support its creation, but not yet. Sims2aholic8 (Michael) (talk) 19:58, 20 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
But it isn't just another selection process for Eurovision. You're giving a deeply misleading impression of what this programme is in Sweden and what it means to Swedish people - which matters a lot more than anything else in terms of how it should be presented. That's my problem. Cmch83 (talk) 12:58, 21 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
No. The article should definitely not be split now. If we split now then whenever something happens, the information will have to added twice. As always, the selection process should be developed on this page and then broken off after the contest is over. Redirecting to Melodifestivalen 2010 would be highly inappropriate because this page is for a lot more information than just the song selection. Cmch83, I do know that Melodifestivalen has a huge place is Sweden and Swedish television, as a follower of the contest myself. However it just isn't feasible to create two articles at the moment, as Grk1011/Stephen described above. After the contest a Melodifestivalen 2010 page could be created, but right now it just wouldn't work to update two articles simultaneously. Sims2aholic8 (Michael) (talk) 15:52, 21 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with Grk1011/Stephen and Sims2aholic8 (Michael). The article should split as soon as the Melodifestivalen 2010 is over and all (or most of) the facts about it are known. I.e. there should be two articles, but not yet. By the way, is this how it's been done previous years or is this a new debate? – Starylon (talk) 09:13, 3 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The same debate was held last year on whether articles should be split out, specifically Festivali i Këngës 2008 (Albania 2009), as well as last year's Melodifestivalen. Sims2aholic8 (Michael) (talk) 17:58, 3 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Strong support It is also ridiculous to have to wait until the end of the competition - so right now the Swedish Wikipedia has an article called Melodifestivalen 2010 but the English-speaking world is denied one. Why can't the Sweden in the Eurovision Song Contest article just refer to the Melodifestivalen article for some of the more gory details? The situation in Sweden is different from in most other countries. Why can't we celebrate that diversity instead of trying to make everything uniform? Kennethmac2000 (talk) 20:11, 6 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I just don't think we should split the article until after the whole details of the semi-finals, Andra Chansen round and final are released by SVT after the final, i.e. full televoting results. After that I think that a separate article can be created, but right now there is just not enough information to warrant a spearate article, as described above. Sims2aholic8 (Michael) (talk) 17:57, 8 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Strong support for splitting up article. Ideally this page should be about the winning song and singer which will be known today anyway. All the rest should go to a separate Melodifestivalen 2010 article werldwayd (talk) 15:17, 13 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
