Speed

[edit]

Mere 12 minutes between Bern and Zurich by 500 kilometres per hour doesn't make any sense. Shanghai Maglev Train reach 431 kmph (not test speed 501 kmph), but 30.5 km takes 7 minutes and 20 seconds, not 1 minute and 10 seconds. It is clear why. Tommasel (talk) 12:18, 16 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Agree. With a distance between Bern and Basel of 120km, a 12 min transit time implies an average speed of around 600km/h (which doesn’t take into consideration acceleration and deceleration time). I wonder where the math came from.Ferkjl (talk) 19:52, 8 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Ferkjl I think that by pulling a vacuum in the tunnel, Swissmetro would be able to travel much faster. 120km in 12 min would be achievable with a constant acceleration/deceleration of 1 m/s^2 and a peak velocity of 943 km/h (262 s acceleration/deceleration duration) Sobservation (talk) 09:00, 1 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
