Article title

When I moved the article this morning from "Symptoms + Cures" to "Symptoms and Cures" I linked to the Wikipedia Manual of Style, specifically the section on article titles which reads, "Avoid special characters such as the slash (/), plus sign (+), braces ({ }), and square brackets ([ ]); use and instead of an ampersand (&)." In the title of this article, the plus sign is being used in place of the word 'and,' and does not add any significant meaning to the title. There are also plenty of sources on the album that use 'and,' '+' and '&' interchangeably. As an example, an acceptable use of the plus sign in an article title would be in the case of 2 + 2 = 5 (song). Fezmar9 (talk) 15:39, 1 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Naming conventions (technical restrictions) has a separate section on Question marks and plus signs which states that "There is no reason why titles should not include ? or +". The section of the Wikipedia Manual of Style that you linked to has a main page, Wikipedia's policy on Article titles. In this article there are no statements indicating that one should not use plus signs in titles, not even their section on Special characters and formatting. The correct formatting of the album's title and title track is "Symptoms + Cures", and seeing as the guidelines on formatting of titles stride against each other, I do not see a reason for the title of this article to be formatted any differently than the album. True, but that quote comes from a section titled 'Other problematic characters' and continues in detailing the specific issues with question marks and plus signs. It says there could be issues on certain browsers with the characters in the URL. The characters will have to be replaced with a code representing the characters just to link to this page. How about using the current formatting (Symptoms and Cures) as a redirection page, meaning that users whom experience issues with "+" can link to the article through the page featuring the title formatted with "and"? This would eliminate the issue of users whom do not understand how to use the "+" corresponding escape code, which is a minority, as most browsers now allow most special characters in Wikipedia links. It was formatted by the band with "+" and not "and" for a reason, and since one can not say it conflicts with any article title guidelines, it would be best to format the title of the article in its correct form. Over the past two days I have written several responses, each time changing my mind. I keep coming up with examples for why this does and does not make sense.
