The Scottish Thane and the English Thegn were not the same - they had different roles, different origins and they existed in different historical contexts, even if there was a clear and probably deliberate analogy between them. They do therefore deserve different articles, but the content of both needs to do a better job of explaining why. Going to try and improve this one first, as it is the one I know most about. Macbeth

The historical King Macbeth fought a Thane of Cawdor who died in battle, but he did not thereby acquire the title himself.

Well maybe, but this is not very consistent with the claim that Thanes were introduced in Scotland in the reign of David I (i.e. not until the following century). At any rate it needs a reference. JBritnell (talk) 00:13, 13 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
