Fred Smith the elder did not have a middle initial -- not C or anything else.
Are we so hung up on middle initials that someone invented a C for him?
His full name was James Frederick Smith, named for his father, Captain James Buchanan "Jim Buck" Smith.
By age 20 he discarded his first name, strongly preferring to be known as Fred or Frederick.
He is also well known as the founder of the Smith Motor Coach Company, based in Memphis, Tennessee, USA,
which became the Dixie Greyhound Lines, also based in Memphis, a major regional highway-coach operating company,
first as a subsidiary, later as a division, of The Greyhound Corporation, the original parent Greyhound firm.
In 1954 the Dixie Greyhound Lines became merged into the Southeastern Greyhound Lines, a neighboring regional division,
which became a part of the Southern Greyhound Lines,
which became a part of the Greyhound Lines East,
which became a part of the undivided nationwide coach operation of The Greyhound Corporation,
which (the core bus business) in 1987 became sold to a new independent, separate, unrelated firm,
named as the Greyhound Lines, Inc., based in Dallas, Texas.
Fred Smith the younger is Frederick Wallace Smith, whose middle name is the maiden name of his mother.

I have many fond menories of, when I was a child, sitting at a stool in a Toddle House and eating a waffle, or a hamburger, or my favorite chocolate iced box pie. I miss the little places. They had a friendliness and character that the modern places just don't have.
