Why Torne River and not Tornio River?[edit]

Why is the name given as Torne River with redirect from Tornio River? Why not the opposite? Or why not both names given? Why is the Swedish name given preference? How was this decided on? What were the criteria? Or is it simply that an ethnic Swedish person authored the article? I would appreciate any insight anyone interested in this subject can give. Tornionväyla[edit]

My map lists Tornionväyla as one of the names of the river. Is it Meankieli? Gerrit ^CUTEDH 09:55, 22 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I first wrote something here not noticing that it should be Tornionväylä. According to Swedish Wikipedia, it is the meänkieli name. Väylä, according to my Finnish net dictionary, means "passage", a way you travel esp. on water in standard Finnish so I guess that name makes sense in standard Finnish too. / Habj 15:01, 22 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

In standard Finnish, including that spoken on the east bank of the river, it is Tornionjoki, not -väylä. If I (a Finnish-speaking Finn) didn't know better, I'd guess the word "Tornionväylä" means the E8-motorway from Keminmaa to Tornio. --Oami 15:55, 2 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
