Appositive phrases
[edit]In the matter of the qualifications to C. R. Ashbee and Jane Addams, this is a particular stylistic issue.
See for example Appositive Phrase : Definition, Usage, Examples for the way these come up, when writing is taught. The appositive phrase, however, is not specially suitable for Wikipedia writing. Particularly when it qualifies a link to an article, it can be fairly much redundant: if the reader seeks more information, it is there via one click.
The appositive phrase actually gets a mention on p. 179 of How Wikipedia Works (PDF). I wouldn't say it was banned here, but there needs to be an informative reason it is needed. Charles Matthews (talk) 10:25, 1 April 2014 (UTC)

Foremost a Building or an Organization?
[edit]It seems to me that the lead paragraph should emphasize "Toynbee Hall" as a social-services organization and not a building. After all, the building was constructed to house the organization. Unless I hear arguments to the contrary, I plan to edit the lead. I'm not sure what to do about "Infobox building", however. Should it be changed to Template:Infobox organization? --Jeremy Butler (talk) 15:42, 9 April 2019 (UTC)
Clashing information
[edit]The description of Toynbee Hall as the first university-affiliated institution of the Settlement Movement is inaccurate. Toynbee Hall opened December 1884, Oxford House Settlement (Bethnal Green) opened in September 1884. The information presented in Wikipedia's article regarding Oxford House is accurate (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oxford_House_(settlement)), and corroborated by Layers of London (https://www.layersoflondon.org/map/records/oxford-house-in-bethnal-green-5b88d41f-897f-4a6d-b0f1-892ced7f44d6) and the Charity Commission's official information regarding the charity. It would be more accurate to say that Toynbee Hall was conceived first, although Oxford House opened first, or to emphasize that the concept of Toynbee Hall came first and not the institution. 2601:199:4300:180:580E:9BCF:2920:8688 (talk) 01:51, 12 June 2023 (UTC)
