Untitled[edit]

I agree that Long base line sonar is a bit of a non-standard name; and that it makes sense to merge its contents into Long Baseline Acoustic Positioning System. So, I'll volunteer to do that in a few days subject to any further comments. I think the Advantages over surface tracking and the discussion of baseline station surveying in Beacon Array are in particular worthwhile mentioning. So, my plan is to merge those aspects, and perhaps polish them a bit. Comments? --Marcoflagg (talk) 17:00, 5 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I agree, the term "sonar" should not be applied to LBL positioning. The two are completely different applications of hydroacoustics. The Long base line sonar article and the Long Baseline Acoustic Positioning System article are simply 2 articles about the same thing; there is no reason they should not be merged. Also, in the LBL "sonar" article, the phrase "surface tracking may have an error radius of up to one-half percent of the water depth" should be corrected: while 1/2 percent water depth is generally the accepted maximum error radius for surveying purposes, the amount of error caused by noise alone is often much more than this. —Preceding unsigned comment added by ScreamingCactus (talkcontribs) 13:28, 12 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

This still needs to be merged. Marcoflagg hasn't been heard from since he volunteered above. Dicklyon (talk) 22:49, 21 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Since this is dragging on, I have redirected Long base line sonar to Long baseline acoustic positioning system. I didn't merge the text, because none of it was sourced, but I did copy the text to here for easy reference. --Epipelagic (talk) 04:37, 4 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
