UCI Extension

This section should contain information that is only relevant to UCI and not tangential materials about other schools.Sxbrown (talk) —Preceding comment was added at 01:35, 17 March 2008 (UTC)

Yes it should. It reveals how and why the information was brought about.Spellmanloves67 (talk) 23:30, 17 March 2008 (UTC)

Once more, it appears as if there is some kind of vendetta that is resulting in non-relevant imformation being posted on this, and other, articles in which Capella University is mentioned. This article should contain information directly related to UC Irvine. The proceedings and outcomes of lawsuits that do not involve the University of California are not relevant to this article.Sxbrown (talk) 01:30, 18 March 2008 (UTC)

Do not agree.Spellmanloves67 (talk) 01:37, 18 March 2008 (UTC)

I agree with Sxbrown, the fact that the information came to light because of a lawsuit is enough. There is no reason to go into an particulars of the lawsuit or how it was dismissed. That is simply irrelevant to this article which is about the controversy involving the financial arrangement.Mysteryquest (talk) 02:18, 18 March 2008 (UTC)

Greek Songfest

UCI Songfest is a year-long fundraising effort that culminates in the largest student-run philanthropic event at UC Irvine. This huge production, involving the participation of over 150 student cast members performing with the support of the entire Greek Community, is currently in its 30th year at UCI and it has truly become one of the most prominent, enjoyable and lasting traditions that we have on this campus. Each sorority is paired with a fraternity and together they put on a 12-minute rendition of a Broadway musical, complete with sets, costumes, complex choreography and lighting design. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Eater Nation (talkcontribs) 04:55, 20 April 2009 (UTC)

Organization of Faculty Information

Right now Faculty information is kept under "academics" but I'm wondering if that's appropriate. They are academics, but it seems like "Rank and Distinction" doesn't necessarily belong in the same section as academics? Aznph8playa2 (talk) 05:28, 24 August 2009 (UTC)

Spanish Americans?

Under the admissions and ethnicity breakdown why are Spanish Americans listed? Why is Spain the only country in the world isolated as a country of origin. Besides, I do not think that this statistic even exists or is accurate. --Seaprt (talk) 20:59, 15 December 2010 (UTC)

That is the way that the ethnicity breakdown is reported in the cited reference. The statistic is correct per the reference. I updated the references for 2010 and moved the citation to inside the table so that it is more obvious than where it was in the section header. -- Gogo Dodo (talk) 05:59, 16 December 2010 (UTC)
Good Job!! I will contact the admissions department directly. It puzzles me that there would either be so many Spanish Americans at UCI or that they would collect such a statistic. I have only ran into a handful myself. --24.18.131.7 (talk) 02:47, 17 December 2010 (UTC)

(by Rotideypoc41352 (talk) 16:48, 7 March 2015 (UTC))

Uh Oh, not sure how to add to this page, I don't know how to wiki well! But, under the UCI controversy section, there is no mention whatsoever of probably the most disgraceful controversy that ever occurred, The Fertility Clinic Scandal. Horrible! Here is a link to some of the information: http://articles.latimes.com/2006/jan/20/local/me-uci20 and http://articles.latimes.com/1995-05-26/news/mn-6298_1_fertility-clinic and http://www.nicolosi.org/fertchange11-16-1996.htm

Also, the self-named "Bones Project," another UCI disgrace! http://articles.latimes.com/2004/mar/11/local/me-ucibodies11 and http://articles.latimes.com/2004/mar/11/local/me-ucibodies11/2 and http://articles.latimes.com/2004/mar/11/local/me-ucibodies11

Please update to include those older scandals which brought the attention to some really sick and twisted science/moral dilemnas. Thanks! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 157.166.183.10 (talk) 05:34, 17 June 2011 (UTC)

UCI-related student assignments

There appears to be a number of new editors ([1], [2], just to cite a few) who are editing UCI-related articles as part of a class project. I'm not sure how to reach the instructor(s) responsible for this class, but I'd like to request that they follow the procedures laid out in WP:Student assignments, including creating a course page. --TorriTorri(talk/contribs) 08:23, 30 April 2014 (UTC)

Flag banned in University of California, Irvine

Please make a new section for this controversial decision -- this news story is trending on the web like a wildfire. CookieMonster755 (talk) 05:43, 7 March 2015 (UTC)

Done. Much more than the conservative tabloid non-story I immediately thought it would be, as a state senator (female, and of Vietnamese origin) proposed that the state constitution be changed as a result. '''tAD''' (talk) 16:13, 8 March 2015 (UTC)
Which of course is nothing more than political grandstanding. Such a change to the CA Constitution would run afoul of the US Constitution, which a politician should know. jfeise (talk) 04:07, 10 March 2015 (UTC)

eSports Initiative

UCI recently launched an eSport initiative which is the first of its kind for this type of school. Should this be added since the project was launched just within the past couple of months or should we wait until the school has had more time with the program before it is added to the page?

New Section and additions to Article

Guinness World Records

UC Irvine has won Guinness World Records for the largest game of capture the flag, for six times, with recent one in September 2015. In addition, the university has broken the record for the largest game of Dodgeball three years straight.[1][2] They has also won records for largest water pistol fight and largest pillow fight.[3]

Additions to Categories at the end of the Article (Missing?)

  • Universities and colleges in Orange County, California
  • Land-grant universities and colleges
  • Association of American Universities
  • Educational institutions established in 1965
  • 1965 establishments in California

Template for Alumni section

University of California, Berkeley, University of California, Santa Barbara and Massachusetts Institute of Technology .. also Harvard University follow a similar pattern and template to the section of Alumni.

  • I propose to re-title the UCI's current section named "People" to "Notable alumni, faculty, and staff"
  • There has to be two sub-sections named "Staff and Faculty" and "Alumni".

Former faculty Nobel laureates[4]

Partly done. The categories and world record material have been added. The categories were mostly already added to the UCI category, which is why they had not been included in the article itself. As has been explained to you previously, WP:OSE is not a valid argument. Per WP:IG and WP:UNIGUIDE, your proposed gallery is unnecessary. Regards, James (talk/contribs) 15:53, 27 July 2016 (UTC)

Neutrality in form

"Controversies" should not have their own separate section; this violates NPOV policy. See Wikipedia:Be neutral in form, Wikipedia:Criticism, and WP:MISC. James (talk/contribs) 22:09, 19 January 2018 (UTC)

Nor should they be placed in a "See also" section that usually contains only a bare listing of other related articles. (Not responding to you, James, but making this point clear for the unregistered editor who keeps moving this material to the "See also" section.) ElKevbo (talk) 21:52, 29 January 2018 (UTC)

Controversies should not be placed at the top of a page describing a major top 50 university. The person who continues to do this must have an ax to grind with the university. If there is an insistence on listing all of the alleged controversies of this university (which President Obama spoke at recently) then they should be placed in their own section, not at the very top of the page. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.168.144.66 (talk) 00:28, 15 February 2018 (UTC)

Done -- I've removed the controversy section due to serious neutrality issues (starting with the fact that "controversy" sections like that are explicitly discouraged in NPOV policy, especially when used as a way of airing miscellaneous grievances that aren't of broader relevance to the page in question). The content that was noteworthy or otherwise relevant was incorporated into the revised history section, later sections, and associated pages. There was also a fair amount of uncited, non-noteworthy, and irrelevant content that was removed entirely. There may be some lingering neutrality issues that will need to be addressed by further edits, but the page as a whole should be much more in line with Wikipedia policy now. Drevolt (talk) 05:18, 11 March 2019 (UTC)

Remove the section "recent era" and create a new page for UCI-related controversies

Clearly someone in Virginia is holding a grudge against UCI by constantly adding negative news (some of which are controversial and has not been proved with sufficient evidence) to the UCI Wikipedia page. No other University of California campus has received the same treatment but some of them have even more scandals to speak of. It is unfair to fill almost half of the page of UCI with controversies and scandals, which in my opinion violates the neutrality stand Wikipedia assumes. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 103.219.194.124 (talk) 10:57, 18 July 2018 (UTC)

Agreed. "Recent Era" isn't even an appropriate title for this section, seeing as it only contains controversies and negative news. There is nothing in the section that contributes to painting a neutral picture of the University's recent history. 0Blake (talk) 18:15, 18 July 2018 (UTC)
Please remember to WP:AGF. "Other stuff exists" is not a valid reason to remove content if it is encyclopedically appropriate. In this case, a neutral expansion of the history section would be welcomed. However, simply removing sourced information that may reflect negatively on the topic is also a violation of NPOV policy, as the rest of the section is heavily and positively slanted in favor of the university's reputation. Creating a new page or section for "controversies" would also be unacceptable, as it implies that "history" only includes positive events and "controversy" is not part of university history. See WP:NIF. James (talk/contribs) 21:36, 19 July 2018 (UTC)
Actually there are controversies that have their own page like the controversies under "recent era." It makes more sense that controversies/incidents/scandals belong in a separate incident page (most already exist), the person(s) page who was involved in the incident (e.g. Francisco Ayala), or within the individual academic unit page (e.g. Biological Sciences). It does not make sense to have them on the main university page because it really isn't part of the general history of the university.

Done -- I've removed the controversy section because of the serious neutrality issues that came with it and the NPOV policy that explicitly says that "controversy" sections of this sort should not be made. In order to preserve neutrality, content that was noteworthy or otherwise relevant was incorporated into the revised history section, later sections, and associated pages. Rather than trying to create a separate controversy page, information that did not belong on the university's main page but that had narrower relevance to particular events or issues was moved to apposite pages. There may be some lingering neutrality issues that will need to be addressed by further edits (and I think that the reformated history section definitely needs some work), but the page as a whole should be much more in line with Wikipedia policy now. UCI Seal

Please use the official UCI seal: https://communications.uci.edu/campus-resources/graphic-standards/seal.php — Preceding unsigned comment added by 128.195.99.84 (talk) 22:46, 18 November 2018 (UTC)

Based on the images in the website you've linked and the comments from the editor who uploaded the image ("I created this image of the UC Irvine seal by slightly modifying the general University of California seal") it looks like you're right. I've removed the image from this article and I'm nominating it for deletion at Commons. ElKevbo (talk) 23:45, 18 November 2018 (UTC)
Recommend using uci18_simpleseal_blue_yellow_white.eps from UCI_SimpleSeal_Set.zip as the new seal which can be found in the link above. --128.195.99.84 (talk) 11:55, 19 November 2018 (UTC)
There are two different designs of the UCI seal, both are considered unofficial. One of the design is newer. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 128.195.99.84 (talk) 12:33, 20 November 2018 (UTC)
I have updated the seal with the colored version from the website. Just FYI, the seal that was used until removed from this article, was in fact the school seal until this year. Corky 02:51, 22 November 2018 (UTC)
Yes, but also if you zoom in close enough there's actually a slight difference from old seal and the one that was on the article. It does not matter anymore. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 128.195.99.209 (talk) 08:50, 22 November 2018 (UTC)
