BLP was first put into the magistrate judge cat by a user from England using a bot, so I presumed a lack of familiarity and removed the category. She is already properly and specifically categorized as a USDC judge, so her work as a magistrate judge is water over the dam. She also served as a commissioner in the Riverside Superior Court. Should we categorize her there too? And how about American or California lawyer? No. Putting her in the (sparsely populated) magistrate category is WP:OCAT. And WP:COP says to try and limit the number of categories. Please revert. --S. Rich (talk) 02:35, 16 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The magistrate category is not restricted to current magistrates. It would be entirely appropriate to categorize her as a California Superior Court commissionner if such a category existed. For example, see Consuelo Bland Marshall, a senior district judge in the Central District. She was a California state judge MANY years ago, and she is in the Category:California state court judges. As for a lawyer category, that would be unnecessary because you can't be a judge on the federal bench or on the California bench without being a lawyer. I'm not a fan of overcategorization, but I don't think this is such an example. Also, the fact that the magistrate category is "sparsely populated" is not a reason not to put her in it. If anything, it is the opposite. The article, which is not a long article, notes her work as a federal magistrate. That is enough to put her in the category.--Bbb23 (talk) 09:46, 16 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
