Is there a verfiable link to the translation of the community's name? To my knowledge of teh Iynu language the word Wâpamekw means beluga but what is the suffix -stui? It definitely doesnt mean "place of". Could someone verify the ending? I thought it might be a mispelling, maybe the ending is really pronounced -stikw in IYnu, which would translate as RIVER of teh Beluga. Any ideas....any whapmagoostui Iynu people reading this that could tell us how the word is pronounced in the Iyyu language?

Clarification

[edit]

The name is Whapmagoostui. The Cree in this village do not use /-e/ phonemes like -pe-, -ke-, -me-, etc. The '-stui' is an Anglicization of more traditional Cree - you will be hard pressed to find anyone who uses this Cree (and to the point, that specific word and morpheme) in contemporary James Bay / Northern Cree. You will never find a word like Whapmegoostui in Whapmagoostui because they do not use the -me- morpheme / phoneme. I would change the title myself but I uninstalled Tavultesoft a long time ago. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 208.114.177.79 (talk) 18:34, 21 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
