Zanesville, Ohio

[edit]

The entry for Zanesville claims that it has the only Y-shaped bridge in the USA.

But a major bridge in NY City, appropriately named the Triborough Bridge, also is Y-shaped with three legs connecting Manhattan, Queens and the Bronx.

You can check it.

Actually, the Triborough Bridge is really a system of separate bridges. There is another truly Y-shaped bridge in Missouri, but it is closed to vehicles.

Wild Animals

[edit]

Worth mentioning? (see CNN)andycjp (talk) 13:27, 19 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Certainly a remarkable event, but it's probably not necessary to do it until the matter's over and we can grab some good and definite reports for citations. (I heard a grizzly, a cougar, and some ape or monkey are still AWOL. The former two may be able to get away for good). To have a breakdown of animals so we can give some figures (how many lions, and how many were shot?) would be nice too. Dysmorodrepanis (talk) 00:23, 20 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Over a decade later, and the only mention is 'see also.' I think a short summary should be included in the town's history. Kdammers (talk) 18:30, 20 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Racism, Segregation and Utility Services

[edit]

Im surprised that the wikipedia page makes no mention of zanesvilles very notable history of racist denial of utilities to black neighborhoods. Besides the animal release, this is the most newsworthy thing about zanesville. It was written about extensively, with stories appearing in the NYT and many other national news sources.

"For years, decades really, residents of the hollow had been asking local officials to extend water lines down their narrow, twisting roads. Not enough water pressure, they were told. Too expensive. Too hilly. Yet just up the hill, not 200 yards away, homeowners have had running municipal water for years. One new homeowner even installed a hot tub and routinely sprinkled his lawn, something residents of the hollow could never do with their 1,000-gallon cisterns, which were constantly running dry."

from [1]

"Waterlines serve the homes of 30 of the 34 white families who live along Coal Run Road, Langan Lane and Russell, Wallwork and Thomas streets. Meanwhile, 23 of the 27 nonwhite households on the same streets must haul water, arrange delivery or pump it from wells prone to sulfur contamination from coal-mining residue."

from [2]

Stories also appear in Time Magazine [3]

I understand why residents of zanesville would not want to publicize their town's racist history, but it is a notable (in my opinion the MOST notable) aspect of this city.
