It has been suggested in some quarters, however, that because of it ubiquity, the chappal is better seen as a strategic deterrent rather than as an actual weapon. This school of thought holds that if a chappal were ever to be deployed, it would inevitably result in retaliation, escalation, and finally mutually assured destruction. The chappal therefore has questionable value as a literal instrument of combat. Opponents of this theory contend that incidents of actual chappal-based violence do indeed occur with some regularity. They point out that a simple Google search on the words chappal and hurling will confirm this.
