Charlie McGeever
[edit]... that Charlie McGeever was invited to train with 1982 FIFA World Cup players Villa, Hoddle and Ardiles at Tottenham, only to injure himself in a Gaelic football match in which he should not have been playing?Source 1 Source 2

- The article is new enough, long enough, stable, and neutrally written. Most of it is sourced, and the hook fact is cited inline and verified. No images so no comment on that. Nominator's first DYKN so no QPQ is required. However, some sentences and the entire "Honours" section lack footnotes. Narutolovehinata5 tccsdnew 00:45, 23 November 2018 (UTC)
- Normally, I wouldn't be marking for closure a nomination relatively so soon after my review. However, the nominator has not edited since the day of the nomination (almost a month ago), and the sourcing issues require either him or another editor who is well-versed in football to fix. Taking into account the length of inactivity and the editor's editing pattern, it seems unlikely that they will be able to return soon enough for the problems to be addressed promptly. As such, I regretfully mark this nomination for closure. Narutolovehinata5 tccsdnew 00:57, 30 November 2018 (UTC)
- Reopened nomination to allow more time for the nominator to fix the issues. See WT:DYK#A closed nomination. Striking overlong hook. Yoninah (talk) 12:04, 3 December 2018 (UTC)
ALT1 ... that Charlie McGeever trained with 1982 FIFA World Cup stars Villa, Hoddle and Ardiles at Spurs, only to hurt himself in a Gaelic football match in which he should not have played?Leitirlad (talk) 02:20, 4 December 2018 (UTC)
- New hook contradicts the first one, though is basically the same, is almost too long (184 characters), and has too much info in it (3 hooks worth of facts). As well as being a bit plain. The referencing issue has been fixed (if just for deleting the Honours section). I'll propose an ALT hook for you to consider
ALT2 ... that Gaelic and association footballer Charlie McGeever used to be became a high school principal in the 2000s?- Kingsif (talk) 20:20, 17 December 2018 (UTC)
- And that's not plain? As well as (possibly) inaccurate - no indication of a resignation or retirement. Leitirlad (talk) 23:17, 18 December 2018 (UTC)
ALT3 ... that former Gaelic footballer Charlie McGeever once trained with 1982 FIFA World Cup stars Villa, Hoddle and Ardiles at Tottenham?- No? Here's a famous footballer, he used to be a principal (without any suggestion of resignation or retirement) is quite interesting because most football players do nothing else. Your suggestion - that a football player, of all things, played football is just not interesting: the other players' prominence is irrelevant unless they're world famous, but people who aren't fans won't know them. It's not an interesting fact. I'll be happy to listen if you can come up with something better. Kingsif (talk) 23:24, 18 December 2018 (UTC)
- Most football players do nothing else? Actually many Gaelic footballers are or have been principals. Examples include Colm O'Rourke Source Pat Spillane Source Éamonn Fitzmaurice Source Maurice Fitzgerald Source. All of these are much more high-profile than McGeever and won more during their playing careers. They have a total of 17 All-Ireland titles between them (the highest trophy available in their sport). Most players would be lucky to get one. Therefore it seems to me that it is your suggestion that is plain. Whereas I can think of no Gaelic footballer who has trained with two FIFA World Cup winners. Can you? Leitirlad (talk) 00:34, 19 December 2018 (UTC)
- You're an expert in Gaelic football, most people don't know it exists. They'll see "football" and assume it's either American or association, even with the word Gaelic there they'll assume it works in the same way (few players have other careers). In any case, being an association football player it's not that surprising he has trained with players who have played in the World Cup. Look at this from an outside perspective, a hook saying, for example "this lacrosse player once trained with these other lacrosse players" seem in any way interesting? Kingsif (talk) 00:40, 19 December 2018 (UTC)
- The title "high school principal" sounds like an honorific - the school's website just calls him "principal" and "Mr.". Leitirlad (talk) 03:24, 20 December 2018 (UTC)
