  • ... that a mining company wants to quarry the New Zealand Miocene fossil site Foulden Maar (pictured) for pig food? Hancock, Farah (10 May 2019). "Dunedin's 'Pompeii' to be mined to make pig food". Newsroom.
    • ALT1:... that four rare fossil spiders have been found at Foulden Maar (pictured) in New Zealand, a site now under threat of destruction from mining? Source: "The four arachnids found at Foulden Maar are the first arachnid fossils identified in New Zealand; previous spider specimens had been found in amber but were not identifiable.[12]" Ref Morris, Chris (9 May 2019). • Comment: This is my first DYK nomination, please let me know if I stuffed anything up!

  • Comment I replaced the first reference text with a ref, used in the article, that better supports the hook, and added (pictured). —Giantflightlessbirds (talk) 09:43, 16 May 2019 (UTC)
  • I really like the first hook, it instantly catches my attention (pig food, quite interesting), but the fact itself is not stated in the article. I would find a way to put it in, as I find it more appealing than the other hook, otherwise, ALT1 works as it is cited and in the article Horsegeek(talk) 20:10, 19 May 2019 (UTC)
  • Another "vote" for first hook, punchy, interesting and less POV.(Dushan Jugum (talk) 21:04, 19 May 2019 (UTC)).
  • Thanks for your comments. In the section 'Mining proposal', the first line of the second para is "Plaman hold the mining rights, and plan to turn all of the fossil-containing diatomite into food for intensively-farmed animals such as ducks and pigs.[27]" Is this not clear enough, or does it need clarifying somehow? • Comment Hi, I was just about to add my review to the page, but someone bet me to it and I don't need the QPQ. Here are my thoughts, they can all be safely ignored. Change the photo to the one of all the students working at the site. It will be more interesting and hooky with pig food comment. I did find the pig food comment on the page. But I do not like having to look too long to have hooks make sense in the text. Maybe a sentence to explain why fossils might make good pig food. I originally thought the mining section (longer than the geology sections) was a little unobjective, after reading and checking refs I am fine with it, but others may not be. (Dushan Jugum (talk) 21:22, 19 May 2019 (UTC)).
  • Thanks. I have inserted the company's claim on their website about why diatomite is good for animal nutrition, and I have changed the photo for the DYK. I have tried to keep the mining section balanced, but it's tricky as the proposal has been very heavily covered in the media, but the mining company are not responding publicly at all, so the vast majority of coverage has been negative. • Looks GTG, photo is free-use, hook is interesting and cited. Horsegeek(talk) 02:59, 20 May 2019 (UTC)
