Telfair Hodgson Jr.

[edit]
  • ... that Telfair Hodgson Jr., the treasurer of Sewanee: The University of the South from 1908 to 1949, helped develop the city of Belle Meade, Tennessee? "Telfair Hodgson Dies At Sewanee. Heart Attack Fatal To Former Treasurer; Had Retired In 1949". The Tennessean. September 17, 1952. pp. 1–2. Retrieved June 15, 2018.; "National Register of Historic Places Inventory/Nomination: Belle Meade Golf Links Subdivision Historic District". National Park Service. Retrieved June 15, 2018.

  • The article is new and long enough as "start" class. 1) The stub-template at the bottom needs to be removed. 2) A reference is needed after the first paragraph under "Early life" (following "Savannah, Georgia"). 3) Another reference is lacking for the last sentence of the first paragraph under "Personal life and death" (following "Medical College of South Carolina"). Other text is cited inline. However, I was not able to get access to all of the references but ref #3 due to subscription status required. Copyvio testing could not be applied due to the offline nature of the references. The hook is well-formatted and interesting. Its length is within limit, and its fact is cited even offline for me. I AGF. QPQ was done. Can go after the a.m. three issues are addressed. CeeGee 18:12, 24 June 2018 (UTC)
User:CeeGee: I have removed the stub tag and added references.Zigzig20s (talk) 18:44, 24 June 2018 (UTC)
  • Thank you. Everything is fine now. Good to go. CeeGee 18:59, 24 June 2018 (UTC)
  • Hi, I came by to promote this, but I don't see anything about Hodgson helping to develop Jackson Boulevard and Belle Meade Boulevard in the NRHP source. Luke Lea seems to have done most of the work. Yoninah (talk) 22:02, 3 July 2018 (UTC)
The NRHP PDF says he was one of the owners of the Belle Meade Company, which developed the city. So he helped develop it.Zigzig20s (talk) 03:26, 4 July 2018 (UTC)
All the source says is that he paid some of the money to buy the land. The source doesn't say anything about him developing Jackson Boulevard and Belle Meade Boulevard, as it specifies Luke Lea. Perhaps you have another source to verify this claim? Yoninah (talk) 10:57, 4 July 2018 (UTC)
The company developed it and it was owned by three investors, including Lea and Telfair, wasn't it?Zigzig20s (talk) 14:14, 4 July 2018 (UTC)
OK, I'm rereading the source carefully and I guess the way you phrased it in the article is all right. Sorry for the hassle. Restoring tick per Cee Gee's review. Yoninah (talk) 17:50, 4 July 2018 (UTC)
  • I pulled this from the queue because I couldn't verify it in a timely manner. Indeed, I see that Yoninah had the same concern I have, that the hook exaggerates or assumes a contribution that isn't clearly stated in the sources. I think another hook will be needed. 1. ALTBLURB1: ... that Telfair Hodgson Jr. was an investor in the Belle Meade Land Company, which developed the city of Belle Meade, Tennessee around the antebellum Belle Meade Plantation?Zigzig20s (talk) 13:36, 12 July 2018 (UTC)
You know how much negative attention the hook about Hodgson Sr got for being insufficiently interesting. This hook is worse IMO. This guy looks to be of marginal notability in any case so I think a better hook will need to be found to justify its inclusion. Gatoclass (talk) 13:53, 12 July 2018 (UTC)
Well, is this a case of WP:IDONTLIKEIT with regards to a notable individual (because he was on the wrong side of history)? The Sewanee-Belle Meade connection is interesting. Or is Sewanee too small a university to be deemed interesting? In that case, can we please draw up a list of interesting universities/individuals/topics that we can post on DYK?Zigzig20s (talk) 14:14, 12 July 2018 (UTC)
  1. ALTBLURB2:... that Telfair Hodgson Jr., the treasurer of Sewanee: The University of the South from 1908 to 1949, was an investor in the Belle Meade Land Company, which developed the city of Belle Meade, Tennessee?
The fact that somebody invested in a company is not at all interesting. Millions of people invest in companies. A better hook needs to be found. Gatoclass (talk) 15:12, 12 July 2018 (UTC)
So basically Belle Meade is the Bel Air of Tennessee, $$$. I don't think anybody knew about this Sewanee connection before I created this article. But if it's too provincial for DYK, I could give up on this nomination?Zigzig20s (talk) 16:51, 12 July 2018 (UTC)
I think you probably should. I just can't see anything in the article that would make a viable hook, and given the resistance the last one had, which was of a more notable person with a more interesting career, I'm thinking this one is just going to create more strife. Gatoclass (talk) 20:34, 12 July 2018 (UTC)
Sure. But we need better guidelines as to what an interesting hook might be, otherwise it's not worth our time. Could you please write an essay?Zigzig20s (talk) 11:00, 13 July 2018 (UTC)
Could you please close this DYK?Zigzig20s (talk) 12:17, 13 July 2018 (UTC)
