Template talk:Lacking ISBN

Category
[edit]It would be a good idea if this also added articles to a category, by month, as does {{LocateMe}} Andy Mabbett 11:04, 3 April 2007 (UTC)
new template - Biblio
[edit]I have created a new template, {{Biblio}}, based on this one, for lists of books that lack not only ISBNs, but author, publisher and/ or date of publication. Andy Mabbett | Talk to Andy Mabbett 14:23, 25 August 2008 (UTC)
tool not working
[edit]The tool that add ISBNs automatically links to no longer works. --Guthrie (talk) 19:53, 19 October 2008 (UTC)
- And it's still down eight months later. I'll remove the link. --McGeddon (talk) 10:27, 3 June 2009 (UTC)
- Actually, the bot seems to have moved to http://toolserver.org/~verisimilus/Bot/DOI_bot/doibot.php, so I've fixed the link instead. --McGeddon (talk) 10:31, 3 June 2009 (UTC)
Look up the link contents using the isbn
[edit]It would be great if this template looked up the rest of the information for the reference based solely on the ISBN. This would eliminate innumerable typos, missing info, etc. A second parameter (beyond the number) would be a page #/range. ISBNdb.com provides a REST API for such a purpose. Bad ISBNs
[edit]A bad ISBN formerly -- a couple of months ago? -- generated a red link. Is that still the case? Varlaam (talk) 09:34, 4 September 2010 (UTC)
Rename this template
[edit]I just added a tracking category, Category:Articles using the ISBN template incorrectly, to find incorrect uses of the form {{ISBN|2-911447-72-7}}. the primary source seems to be from people translating articles from other languages (e.g., French) where fr:Modèle:ISBN does something different. we should consider renaming this template to {{Lacking ISBNs}}
or something more descriptive. Frietjes (talk) 15:50, 27 January 2015 (UTC)
- Frietjes I totally agree. -- Magioladitis (talk) 18:45, 27 January 2015 (UTC)
Edit request: Update the documentation
[edit]Greetings and felicitations. The template's code includes the option to make the template specific to an article's section, but this is not mentioned in the documentation. Would someone please be so kind as to add a mention of this? —DocWatson42 (talk) 16:51, 13 March 2024 (UTC)
- @CactiStaccingCrane: Adding you as you were the last editor to work on this template and are still active. —DocWatson42 (talk) 23:20, 15 March 2024 (UTC)
This template should be eliminated and in the mean time explicitly discouraged
[edit]The ISBN is an optional metadata parameter that is not required to locate a book. It is fine to include ISBNs in citations, and editors should feel free to add them where missing, but pointing out that some citations do not include ISBNs absolutely does not warrant an eyesore banner. Empirically, this banner is also not effective. I just clicked a random 6 pages which include it, and for 5 of the 6 the banner was >8 years old but never successfully encouraged the addition of ISBNs. Adding this banner to pages is very reader hostile for minimal if any concrete benefit, and thus net harmful to the project. –jacobolus (t) 23:48, 18 July 2024 (UTC)
