Lostock Lane and Chew Moor
[edit]Two stations, Lostock Lane and Chew Moor, were recently added by Paul Sidorczuk (talk · contribs) and Dr Greg (talk · contribs), positioned between Bolton and Lostock Junction. I have my doubts about both of these. See
- Marshall, John (1969). The Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway, volume 1. Newton Abbot: David & Charles. ISBN 0-7153-4352-1.

Lostock Lane is mentioned as being on the Bolton-Preston line "4+1⁄2 miles from Bolton" (Marshall 1969, p. 78), and since Lostock Junction is three miles from Bolton, Lostock Lane can't have been between Lostock Junction and Bolton, but further west. The present Horwich Parkway is 5 miles from Bolton, so Lostock Lane would have been half a mile east of that - about here. As for Chew Moor, that station was "between Lostock Junction and Westhoughton" (Marshall 1969, p. 133), possibly here, and so should definitely not be on this diagram. --Redrose64 (talk) 10:35, 23 February 2015 (UTC)
- My source was...
- Wignall, C. J. (1983). Complete British Railways Maps and Gazetteer, from 1830–1981 (1st ed.). Oxford: Oxford Publishing Company. ISBN 0-8609-3162-5. OCLC 10360638.
- Wignall, C. J. (1985). Complete British Railway Maps and Gazetteer 1825–1985 (2nd ed.). Poole, UK: Oxford Publishing Company. ISBN 0-8609-3294-X.
- ...(the 1983 edition) which unambiguously shows these stations where I put them. I've now just checked another source, Dewick's 2002 Complete Atlas of Railway Station Names, which agrees with Wignall's position for Chew Moor, but disagrees over Lostock Lane, putting it between Lostock (Junction) and Horwich Parkway. But the Chew Moor position seems odd compared with where the modern-day OS map displays "Chew Moor".
- (By the way,
{{Wignall-Atlas}}
, which I just transcluded above, is daft because it lists two different editions which could well be incompatible with each other.) -- Dr Greg talk 19:19, 23 February 2015 (UTC) - As the evidence for Lostock Lane seems fairly clear (the lane itself is labelled on Bing maps), I have moved it. I've left Chew Moor alone for now to see if I can find more evidence. -- Dr Greg talk 19:31, 23 February 2015 (UTC)
- @Dr Greg: I've found Chew Moor station on an 1849 Ordnance Survey 1:10560 map - to the south west of my suggestion of 10:35 today. It was at 53°33′43″N 2°30′29″W / 53.562°N 2.508°W (to the nearest 0.001 degree) - looking at that point on a modern map, its approach road from the south is buried under the M61 motorway. --Redrose64 (talk) 20:23, 23 February 2015 (UTC)
