Name[edit]

This template should be called "R from alternative spelling", for two reasons: 1) It's incorrect grammar 2) It's confusing - some redirect templates use alternative, others use alternate. ··gracefool | 07:08, 16 Jun 2005 (UTC)

This template is deprecated[edit]

Templates within redirects are officially deprecated for technical reasons; see here. Categories for redirects should still be OK. Wmahan. 05:11, 1 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

To save anybody who stumbles on the above remark some time: Wmahan is referring to Wikipedia talk:Redirect/Archive 2#Content of redirects: templates, categories, multiple lines. However, all these template are still listed on Wikipedia:Redirect and being used, so I'm not sure whether they're deprecated or not. -- Jitse Niesen (talk) 21:52, 26 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
So what replaces it? SunCreator (talk) 13:48, 14 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Redirects[edit]

Two points:

 • The procedure is, if one wants to include new redirects, they should first be created and only then they are added to the documentation page. Otherwise, they will show as red links and may confuse other contributors.
 • There are good reasons to show all existing redirects in the Redirects section. They are then available for use by anyone who may want to use them. Also, if an administrator does not want so many redirects and wants to delete some of them, they have a list to use for that work. – PAINE ELLSWORTH CLIMAX! 22:11, 24 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

embed=yes?[edit]

This template accepts a |embed=yes parameter, but its use is not explained on the documentation. What exactly is it for, does anyone know? —capmo (talk) 01:12, 27 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

That parameter is found in all the rcats and helps the templates identify whether they are used in the This is a redirect template or are applied individually. Hope this helps! – Paine  02:42, 29 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I think I got it, thanks! Also found a brief explanation at Redirect template. —capmo (talk) 05:51, 29 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Don't encourage updating pages that link to an alternative spelling redirect[edit]

The message box for the template states: "Pages that link to this redirect may be updated to link directly to the target page."

This sounds like encouraging editors to "update" such links, as if there is something wrong with them, like they haven't been fixed yet. But there may be good reasons to prefer an alternative spelling in the context of the link, as for the spelling of words in general (see e.g. WP:TIES), so I think WP:NOTBROKEN should prevail and such "updates" should in fact be discouraged unless there is a strong reason to prefer the spelling of the target page.  --Lambiam 23:30, 20 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

On the fence about this because of the "may" usage rather than "Pages that link to this redirect should (or must) be updated...". How would you reword it to improve it, Lambiam? – Paine  07:12, 2 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Something like this:
 --Lambiam 09:15, 2 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

R from incorrect spacing[edit]

Template R from incorrect spacing redirects to this template. I think it should redirect to R from misspelling (whence R from incorrect spelling redirects), not "alternative" spelling. For example, I've just categorised Wal mart as incorrect spacing, and it is definitely incorrect and not an alternative for Walmart, the target. 188.143.76.147 (talk) 20:08, 5 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Should the redirects such as R from alternative hyphenation, mentioned in the documentation as " likely to change in the future", be sorted into Category:Template redirects with possibilities? 92.249.211.146 (talk) 07:32, 8 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Creation of redirecting templates[edit]

R from alternative hyphenation, R from alternative punctuation, and R from alternative spacing all redirect here and this template states that "This is likely to change in the future, so please use the more specific template names." Is there any reason this hasn't been done yet? If not, I'll go ahead and create those templates (or make edit requests for their creation) and retarget other redirects to those new templates. ~ Eejit43 (talk) 16:08, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi editor Eejit43, and thank you for asking! These have been waiting for a fairly long time, and I think the reason that no action has been taken is that this is a low-priority issue which hasn't been discussed much over the years. Probably a good idea to ping the creators, editors SMcCandlish, Eugene van der Pijll and Robert Greer. Those last two might be retired from editing. Might consider notifying the WT:Redirect talk page and the project talk page to gather more interested editors. Thanks again! P.I. Ellsworth , ed. put'er there 16:32, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'll ping SMcCandlish and create a section on WT:Redirect, though I don't anticipate it being controversial enough to warrant getting the attention of a ton of editors (though you never know...). ~ Eejit43 (talk) 18:25, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It's something I'd meant to get around to, but just kind of forgot about it. It definitely would be nice to start dividing up the huge "R from alternative spelling" morass into subcategorization that can be analyzed a bit more narrowly.  — SMcCandlish ¢ 😼  19:20, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
In that case I'll start on this soon, thank you for your input! ~ Eejit43 (talk) 19:27, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Template-protected edit request on 20 February 2024[edit]

R from alternative hyphenation, R from alternative punctuation, and R from alternative spacing have been created so I'd suggest changing this template to the following. Additionally, I've changed "a different" to "an alternative" to match similar templates.

Extended content
<noinclude>
</noinclude>{{Redirect template
 |id=R from alternative spelling
 |name=From an alternative spelling
 |from=a title with an alternative spelling of {{#if:{{{1|{}}}}|{{{1|{}}}}|the target name}}
 |info=Pages that link to this redirect may be updated to link directly to the target page if that results in an improvement of the text. Do not "fix" such links if they are not broken. Also, these links should not be replaced with piped links.
** There are many more specific templates such as R from alternative hyphenation, R from alternative punctuation, and R from alternative spacing. Also see subcategories of :Category:Redirects from modifications for other options (capitals, abbreviations, diacritics, plurals, stylizations, transliteration, ligatures, different parts of speech, etc.)
 |all category=Redirects from alternative spellings
}}<noinclude>
<!-- Place categories on /doc subpage; interwikis go to Wikidata. -->
Documentation
</noinclude>

Thank you so much! The one thing that wasn't changed was the name parameter, was that intentional? ~ Eejit43 (talk) 13:59, 20 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Not intentional, just mybad and now fixed. So sorry. P.I. Ellsworth , ed. put'er there 16:46, 20 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Template-protected edit request on 15 April 2024[edit]

Please merge the content of Template:R from alternative spelling/sandbox here (see the diff). This change adds the linking to pages provided in the first parameter through no redirect, and also has detection for existing links that would break said template. This is practically identical to the change made at R from modification. This was tested at the testcases subpage. ~ Eejit43 (talk) 21:36, 15 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

 Done * Pppery * it has begun... 14:36, 16 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
