Subst?

[edit]

Is there any guidance on whether this should / should not be substed? Most cases I've seen aren't substed. Since the category is there for now, I guess it doesn't really matter. Though it's usually not rendered and it otherwise doesn't hurt to leave unsubsted. --Interiot 16:28, 1 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I say it shouldn't, but it seems Betacommand disagrees, so that is pretty much the end of that – Gurch 17:33, 12 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Shortcuts from article-space into project-space

[edit]

Are we using this template to mark shortcuts from article-space into project-space, too? I just tagged Speedy delete as such but was wondering if we want to tag them with a specific (new) template. --AmaltheaTalk 16:33, 15 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Categories

[edit]

editprotected Shouldn't Category:Redirects from shortcut be removed from the <noinclude> section? This template is not itself a redirect. OrangeDog (talkedits) 23:47, 14 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

No, it's quite right as it is: Note that the template also has an includeonly block which does, by default, put such a redirect into both Category:Redirects from shortcut and Category:Unprintworthy redirects. The categories in the noinclude block are to categorize the template, which is why some have a category list-as parameter (one has "Shortcut", two have " " to bring them to the top). Unprintworthy category

[edit]

This redirect template automatically places all shortcuts into the Unprintworthy category. Since the Unprintworthy and Printworthy categories are concerned with a future printed version of Wikipedia, and since such a version would only include articles in the Main namespace, there is a need to use the Main other template to ensure that all the many shortcuts that are not in the Main namespace do not go into the Unprintworthy category. The following modification to this redirect template will still place shortcuts that are in the Main namespace, such as the H:R shortcut, into the Unprintworthy category. However, shortcuts that are not in the Main namespace, such as the WP:+ shortcut, will then not be needlessly placed into the Unprintworthy category.

 • Please change this line:
{}
 • to this:
{{Main other|{}}}

Please be sure to include the template-closing braces at the very end of the line. This should be a non-controversial mod, because none of the non-Main-namespace redirects belong in either the Printworthy or the Unprintworthy categories. – PIE ( CLIMAX ) 08:07, 19 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Repeated text

[edit]

This template contains repeated text: "Shortcuts are Shortcuts are" should be just "Shortcuts are". DH85868993 (talk) 11:55, 17 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

 • Not done: I don't see that text anywhere... All I see is:

This is a redirect from a shortcut. A shortcut is a specialized type of redirect page that provides an abbreviated wikilink to a project page or one of its sections, usually from the Wikipedia namespace. They are commonly used on community pages and talk pages rather than in articles themselves.
For a list of such redirects, see the category below.
Which is built with the following code:

----
This is a redirect from a shortcut. A shortcut is a specialized type of redirect page that provides an abbreviated wikilink to a project page or one of its sections, usually from the Wikipedia namespace. They are commonly used on community pages and talk pages rather than in articles themselves.

<includeonly>
{}
{{Main other|{}}}
</includeonly>
Can you show me where the repeated text is, please? Thanks Technical 13 (talk) 14:48, 17 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Remove "except template namespace"?

[edit]

The template currently states:
This is a redirect from a shortcut in any namespace to a page in any namespace except template namespace.
While this is technically true as a different message appears when it does target a page in the template namespace, that different message is invoked by the same template, causing ambiguity and confusion, as shown at Template talk:Ubx#Template-protected edit request on 20 November 2023, where an editor doesn't realize that R from template shortcut = R from shortcut. Thusly, I propose:
This is a redirect from a shortcut in any namespace to a page in any namespace.

Not done per WP:NOTBROKEN – the first redirect has been retargeted to Help:Link. P.I. Ellsworth , ed. put'er there 18:32, 29 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Paine Ellsworth The redirect link interferes with my edit filter. Part of the filter is supposed to catch Double redirects, but it currently also hits redirects in the rcats like this one and R from alternative spelling, I'll see if I find a way around it. Thanks Nobody (talk) 05:08, 30 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the explanation! Have you found a way-around yet? P.I. Ellsworth , ed. put'er there 20:44, 31 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
