Recounting it merely as "injured" overlooks this important moment, which then sets into motion the entire drama - McCoy's accident, the change of history, and the confrontation with Keeler's destiny. undo
  • curprev 20:4420:44, 8 April 2024Wiltonhall talk contribs 86,982 bytes −12 changed "proper timeline" to "history." History is restored, and yes it is restored in a way that brings back the Enterprise, but the word "proper" is too strong and is a critical interpretation, not consistent with the episode's haunting uncertainty if it /was/ the proper choice or not. Remember the Guardian tells Spock his science is very crude, so following Spock's admonition to kill Keeler is /not/ established as "proper" by any but a superficial reading. So just "history" is consistent/ undo

  • curprev 05:3305:33, 3 March 2024Wiltonhall talk contribs 86,534 bytes +106 Crucially, it is /not/ established in the episode that Spock's admonition that Keller must die was the right choice - that is what makes this episode so gut wrenching and haunting. Because if you can look into the future and see the results of your choices being the opposite of what you intend, how can Kirk know saving the Enterprise timeline /itself/ ultimately ends in good? The unedited version falsely forecloses this reading, which is clearly indicated by Kirk's silence and other plot clues. undo

Added quotes about what McCoy says because crucial to the plot's questioning who is really mad: Kirk who allows Keeler to die or McCoy who tries to save her. undo
  • curprev 23:1123:11, 18 September 2023Wiltonhall talk contribs 86,289 bytes +5 →‎Plot: Removed "delusional and paranoid" because it interprets the episode rather than describes. it. To the others McCoy seems delusional and paranoid, but as we will see, the episode suggests McCoy, in his ranting, may in fact be the only sane one - Spock and Kirk do actually plan a murder. undo
  • curprev 23:0823:08, 18 September 2023Wiltonhall talk contribs 86,284 bytes +21 →‎Plot: Removed "With history restored," because one important point is that there are multiple histories, and it would be more accurate to say "with their preferred history restored", but this is awkward, so removed it entirely and just added ", where they find the Enterprise is restored." to the end as it accurately described the episode rather than adding there is one History to restore, which is not found in the episode." undo
