Twickenham School, formerly Twickenham Academy and before that Whitton School, is a co-educational secondary school located in Whitton, in the London Borough of Richmond, south-west London.
A £24m refurbishment to the school was completed in July 2013 and reopened by then Twickenham MP Vince Cable.
Twickenham School is part of a Multi Academy Trust, the Richmond West Schools Trust, along with one other Richmond borough school, Hampton High. The Trust is supported by other local secondary schools, including Waldegrave School.[1][2][3]
GCSE results
- In 2016, 55 per cent of students achieved A* - C grade at GCSE – an 11 percent improvement on the previous year. English results improved by 12 percent, while Maths grades were up by 13 percent. Headteacher Assal Ruse told the Richmond and Twickenham Times in August 2016: “It shows that the measures we have introduced since April are already starting to have a positive impact on the academic performance of our students.”[4]
- In 2017, 55 per cent of students achieved five A* to C grades and 14 per cent got grades A* to A.[5][6]
History
The first school to be built on the site of Twickenham School was named Whitton School. It was established in 1959, to cater for boys from the former Kneller School and girls from Stanley Road School.[7]
By 2001, the school buildings at Whitton, and other local schools, were considered inadequate for a modern education system.[8] The school was considered for rebuilding under the national BSF programme in 2007, but only one school in the borough could be selected and Teddington School was chosen instead.[9]
Whitton School was later re-built as part of the next Government's sponsored academies programme,[10] becoming Twickenham Academy in 2010, under the governance of the Learning Schools Trust.[11]
The governance of Twickenham Academy was transferred to the Richmond West Schools Trust in September 2016.[12] Its name was changed to Twickenham School shortly afterwards.
