Muhammad Mokaev (born 30 July 2000) born in Dagestan now a British Professional UFC [3] mixed martial artist. He was a two-time amateur MMA Junior World Champion and the IMMAF Bantamweight Junior European and World Champion. With 30 wins and no losses, he holds one of the longest active undefeated streak in MMA.[4] As of 17 May, 2020, he was the #1 in the List of current IMMAF Junior fighters Rankings IMMAF pound-for-pound rankings.[5][6] Mokaev is also one of the most eagerly sought after MMA fighters in the world [7]. On 11th June 2020, Mokaev signed Professional contract with the Brave Combat Federation.[8] On his professional debut on 1st August 2020, Mokaev beat Irishman Glenn McVeigh by decision.[9] He has been sought after in the UFC development program as well as Bellator. In 2015 Mokaev became European Junior Champion in Brazilian jiu-jitsu.[10] This was followed by becoming Gi and NoGi champion at the NAGA championships in 2016, 2017[11] and 2018. He is also a 5xBritish Wrestling champion. In 2019 he also became the Men Senior / Intermediate / Adults / -65 kg champion at the ADCC Championships held in Manchester, UK.[12]. On 17th November 2021 Mokaev signed for UFC roster being the youngest on the roster,with China's Zhu Rong the only other of his age in the UFC [13].

An ethnic Kumyks hailing from the Dagestan and northern Chechnya region of Russia, Mokaev became IMMAF world Junior Bantamweight Chamption in 2018 and 2019.[citation needed]

Early life[edit]

Muhammad was born on 30th July 2000, in the village of Buynaksk in Buynaksky District of the Dagestan ASSR, an autonomous republic within the Russian SFSR, Soviet Union,[14] Mokaev moved to the UK aged 12[15] and quickly decided he wanted to become a wrestler. His motivation was to become the best he could be at that sport. He joined Manchester Wrestling Club in 2013 and started competing. He became the British Junior Champion in the 55 kg category in 2014 [16] and repeated the same in 2015.[17]

Mokaev arrived from Dagestan as a 12 year old refugee. He quickly settled in Wigan and joined 'Wigan Youth Zone' where he was introduced to wrestling.[18]

In 2015 he had his first amateur MMA fight and, while still a Wigan schoolboy, was followed on Instagram by His Highness Sheikh Khalid bin Hamad al Khalifa - the fifth son of the King of Bahrain. Sheikh Khalid was on the lookout for future MMA stars, a keen equestrian rider and triathlete, he launched the KHK MMA team - initially featuring Nurmagomedov - in 2015, then his own MMA promotion - Brave CF - in 2016. By 2018 the two had become friends and the Sheikh assisted Mokaev in a IMMAF tournament in respect of visa and training issues[19]

Mixed martial arts career[edit]

Early career[edit]

Muhammad Mokaev made his amateur MMA debut in November 2015 and compiled four wins by the end of the following year in 2016. On 11 February 2017, Mokaev became the Flyweight champion for Tanko FC, having defeated his opponent with a unanimous decision, he was 16 years old at the time[20] Over the next four years he would go undefeated, finishing off as champion as IMMAF Junior Bantamweight Champion in successive years. Originally Mokaev started training in MMA at Kaobon MMA gym in Liverpool under the tutelage of Colin Heron. He worked and earned his gym membership by clean mats at the gym. At the time Mokaev was training at Kaobon, Darren Till (UFC) was one of the fighters there.[21]

Amateur Career[edit]

IMMAF Fighting Championships[edit]

Mokaevs first foray into the IMMAF was in 2018[22] where he became the first Dagestani to become amateur world champion in the Bantamweight category. Mokaev repeated the feat in 2019 in Bahrain and is the reigning World Champion.[23] In addition to winning the gold in the World Championships, Mokaev also won the gold in 2019 European Championship. [24]

IMMAF World Championship 2018[edit]

Mokaev beat Reo Yagamuchi to become the hold of the gold medal at the 2018 World Championship held in Manama, Bahrain. Flying the flag for Team England, Mokaev competed in the concurrent Junior World Championships (for athletes age 18-20), in the men's bantamweight division. It took 3 victories in as many days which resulted him beat opposition from Russia, Kazakhstan and Mexico before the final where he claimed a unanimous decision win over Japan's Asian Open champion, Reo Yamaguchi.[25]

IMMAF European Championships 2019[edit]

The European Championships took place in Rome, Italy for the second competition in a row he faced Reo Yagamuchi in the final and for the second successive time he beat yagamuchi by Unanimous Decision.[26]

IMMAF World Championship 2019[edit]

Mokaev beat Reo Yagamuchi for the third time to become the two time world champion at bantamweight. The final was won by Unanimous decision. Mokaev dominated Reo, the final was notable for the use of 3 suplex moves by Mokaev on Yagamuchi. In this competition Mokaev was felled by an overhand right by Tynyshtyk Zhanibek (Kazakhstan) for the first time in his fighting career. Another first was when Mokaev was taken down by Nikolay Atanasov from Bulgaria.[27]

Professional Career[edit]

Mokaev debuted on 1st August 2020 against Glenn McVeigh, in Sweden under the Brave Combat Federation 37 card. He scored a unaminous decision victory.[28] The fight with McVeigh earned Mokaev with Fight of the Night Bonus [29]

Moakevs second bout was against Hayden Sheriff. This was an exhibition fight. Mokaev finished the fight in under minute, landing a high kick sending Sheriff to the octagon fence, followed up by punches to the body and head. Sheriff curled up at which point the referee saved him from a further beating. The fight was fought at Bantamweight - 61kg.

The 3rd fight was against Jamie Kelly, from Rochdale, fighting out of SBG gym under Martin Stapleton. The fight won the "Fight of the Night" bonus[30]. Kelly, 21 years old, took Mokaev to the 3rd round for the first time in his professional career, before Mokeav took the fight to the ground and locked in a Rear Naked Choke, earning him a submission[31].

Moakevs fourth fight was Dave Jones under the Celtic Gladiator 28 promotion in Glasgow, with Jones tapping to strikes [32].

In Muhammads fifth fight he defeated Abdul Hussein under the Brave Combat Federation 49. It was described as "15mins of non-stop scrambling". The fight was won by decision by Mokaev.[33].

The sixth fight was declared a no-contest due to low kick at Brave Combat Federation 51, when Ibragim Nazurov was deemed unable to continue after absorbing a first round low blow.[34]. The fight result meant that Mokaev remains unbeaten at 4 and 0.

In Mokeav's 7th Professional fight he fought Blaine O'Driscoll defeating him with Rear Nake Choke in Round 2 under the Brave Combat Federation 54 Promotion [35]

In March 2022 made his long awaited UFC debut by beating Cody Durden after 56 seconds in the first round via rear naked choke. He took the fight of the night. [36]

In July 2022 Mokaev fought Charles Johnson only beating after uniaminous decision after 3x5 minute rounds. [37]

Fighting style[edit]

Muhammad Mokaev styles himself on Khabib Nurmagamedov and Rustam Khabilov his wrestling background allows him dominate and maul his opponents[38].. His wrestling coach is Oleg Druzhynets from the British Wrestling Club based in Salford, Greater Manchester.[39] His MMA coach is Dean Garnett from Aspire MMA Gym in Liverpool has stated that the sky is the limit for Mokaev. [40]

Personal life[edit]

Muhammad Mokaev currently is not married. He trains 2 times a day and maintains a strict training regime and diet. In 2020 Mokaev got involved in a twitter spat with Irish Bellator bantamweight star – and teammate of Conor McGregor – James Gallagher, possibly setting up a matchup between them. Mokaev would have to sign a contract with Bellator for this to happen,[41]
