Autograss racing is a form of amateur motor racing. It takes place in Britain, at venues throughout England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland, and the Republic of Ireland. Its governing body is the National Autograss Sports Association.[1]
The track[edit]
Autograss tracks are natural surfaces such as grass[2]. Tracks are usually oval and approximately a quarter mile (400 m) in length[2].
Race Categories[edit]
Races are run in Mens, Ladies and Junior (12-15 years, either sex) categories. There are eleven classes of car ranging from production saloons, through progressively more modified vehicles to the single-seat 'specials'. Juniors are limited to class 1 or 'or Junior Specials'.
Race Format[edit]
Single category races (e.g. Ladies Class 1), with up to 8 cars starting on a straight line grid and running 4-8 laps per race.
Classes[edit]
Class 1[edit]
Models: Originally only the Austin Mini was allowed but now several other cars are sanctioned: the Fiat Cinquecento, Citroën AX and the Peugeot 106.
Engine Size: Single engine, 998 cc
Other restrictions: Engine and gearbox to be from same car. A roll bar and fire extinguisher must be fitted within easy reach of the driver.
Comment: Intended to provide a relatively low-cost entry point to the sport.
Class 2[edit]
Models: The car used may be of either Rear Wheel Drive, either a saloon, estate or hatchback, or Front Wheel Drive either a saloon or hatchback.
Engine Size: Single engine, Maximum 1300 cc
Other restrictions: Engine gearbox must remain basically standard within strictly enforced measurements. All the fuel-air mixture must pass through a single 32mm diameter restrictor. A roll bar and fire extinguisher must be fitted within easy reach of the driver.
Comment: To limit the use of unusual cars the vehicle make and model are restricted by the National Autograss Sports Association to those that are listed in the original Palgrave and now Glasses Guide Technical Services Data Manuals.
Class 3[edit]
Models: The car used must be a saloon or hatchback and have Rear Wheel Drive. Any front engined, front wheel drive saloons with a wheelbase of 2400mm or more may be converted to front engine rear wheel drive.
Engine Size: Single engine, Minimum 1421 cc
Other restrictions: There are unlimited tuning modifications allowed, the engine/gearbox/axle need not be original. A roll bar and fire extinguisher must be fitted within easy reach of the driver.
Class 4[edit]
Models: The car used must be a Front or Rear Wheel Drive saloon, hatchback, van or pick up.
Engine Size: Single engine, Maximum 1130 cc
Other restrictions: The engine must be of the type originally fitted to the car and must remain in its original position. There are unlimited tuning modifications allowed. A roll bar and fire extinguisher must be fitted within easy reach of the driver.
Comment: Intended to allow low cost entry to the unlimited tuning classes.
Class 5[edit]
Models: Any.
Engine Size: Single engine, 1131 - 1420 cc
Other restrictions: Any 2 valves per cylinder engine - multi-valve engines are not allowed. Gearbox, engine position and axles are not limited. Front or Rear Wheel Drive are permitted. A roll bar and fire extinguisher must be fitted within easy reach of the driver.
Comment: Intended to allow low cost entry to the "any engine in any vehicle" classes.
Class 6[edit]
Models: Any.
Engine Size: Single engine, Minimum 1421 cc
Other restrictions: Front Wheel Drive only. A roll bar and fire extinguisher must be fitted within easy reach of the driver.
Class 7[edit]
Models: Any saloon
Engine Size: One or two engines with a total capacity of 1421 cc or greater
Other restrictions: There are unlimited tuning modifications allowed, the engine / gearbox / transaxle / axle need not be original or fitted in its original position. A roll bar and fire extinguisher must be fitted within easy reach of the driver.
