Woojer (company)[edit]

Woojer is a Virtual Reality Haptic Technology company, created and produced in the United States, Israel and Taiwan. Its name is derived from the word woofer, since the experience the user gets with Woojer is that of having a woofer attached to the body. Woojer has been awarded three patents, and these are very small and powerful and therefore allow their wearable products to give the user a full 360° degrees haptic experience. Such haptic experience can function with many activities, mainly music-listening and video game playing. Some future applications also include various medical purposes and different uses in the new automotive technology. The idea for the product has manifested after the founder, a sound engineer, had experienced an Interference with sound while waiting at a public bus station. He later researched how to recreate this experience, and teamed up with the other founders to create the product.

Overview[edit]

Woojer has a grand frequency response of 0Hz-315Hz. It can be used together with an audio system, such as a MP3 player or a video game console. The wide frequency range allows for the tactile transducers to deliever a feeling of the low frequencies to the user's body. This application is groundbreaking in its research, and can be applied to leisure activities like gaming and music-hearing as well as professional ones in game developement, sound design as well as automative technology and medical applications. The haptic technology itself may also aid deaf or hard of hearing people to engage in activities they are usually precluded from, such as listening to music.

History[edit]

Woojer was founded in 2011 by Israeli and American entrepreneurs. The initial aim was to enhance music listening for both regular users and professional Sound Enginnering and game developers, as well as to add a new tactical, haptic dimension of VR for video games.

Woojer's Kickstarter campaign ran during December 2013, and gained a support of pre-sales in more than $300.000. Following the successful social campaign, Woojer's first product officially launched during 2014. Later, new products launched for Pre-Sale in the beginning of 2017. During that time period, the company worked on patenting their Osci electrical parts and sketched a new line of Woojer products with these better equipped sensors. After testing a few potential prototypes, three Osci inventions were awarded a patent, the first one on May 2015, and two other patents followed suit shortly after. These patents are a Tactile Low Frequency Transducer; a Wearable Vibration Device and a Personal Media Playing System.

The products that were geared with these new sensors were the Strap, a thin diagonally-worn belt made for Fitness and Music experiences, and a Vest, a more heavy duty Vest designed for gamers and game developers as well as for sound engineers and musicians.

Partners[edit]

The main partners and investors of Woojer are Peter Chou, formerly CEO of HTC and father of Taiwanese VR, and Eli Harari, the founder and former CEO of SanDisk.
