'Running on Empty' is a 2024 dark comedy film, written and directed by Daniel André. It stars Francesca Eastwood, Lucy Hale and Keir Gilchrist.
Set in Sherman Oaks Los Angeles, the story follows lonely Mort who gets dumped by his fiancée when it is revealed he has under a year to live, then connects with Kate who works at a dating service which matches people with impending death dates, all while avoiding a manic pimp.
Plot
[edit]Mort(imer), is a 25-year-old living in Sherman Oaks, LA, working in his family’s funeral parlour. His fiancee Nicole insists they get a house he feels is pricey. To get a mortgage, they must submit their LDCs, a test Mort has avoided until now. The Life Day Count quite accurately calculates the number of days the person has to live. As Mort is given under a year, and Nicole over half a century, she immediately dumps him. Despairing if he should bother to look for someone new, he tells his dilemma to one of their clients.
When their hearse-driver Sid overhears, he calls Mort out for talking to a corpse again. Later, he hands him a card to a strip club. Promising to think about it, Mort heads to his mom’s for dinner. His uncle Barry again suggests a dating app.
Back at home, Mort finds a pamphlet for a dating agency, especially matching people with LDCs. There, Kate does his video interview, where he tells her how he convinced Barry into turn the business into an adventure funeral parlour.
Mort starts to go the strip club but chickens out, ducking into the nearby bar. Inside, Rita pretends he is her boyfriend to keep someone from bothering her. Soon she offers to let Mort feel her breasts and invites him to her place.
Rita changes into sexy underwear, then asks if he’s paying with cash or credit. Shocked, Mort insists he had no idea, so she offers a free blow job. Rita drops dead before he gets it, and he sees today is her LDC on her ID.
Her pimp Simon turns up before Mort can leave, demanding 500 although technically he did not get any satisfaction, not even the BJ. Taking his car, he says he’ll be back for the money, as he has Mort’s address.
Mort runs into Nicole in his neighbrhood supermarket, who has her latest fiancé with her, although they broke up only one month ago. He decides to try out the dates the agency matched him with. One is openly hostile, another sneaks out mid-date with his jacket and wallet and third insists on a one-night-stand.
Arriving at the dating agency livid on a Saturday, it’s closed but Mort runs into Kate. As he’s visibly upset, she gives him a hug and invites him to breakfast. Having a pleasant morning together with Mort getting his wallet back thanks to Kate, she suggests they hang out again.
As Mort arrives home, he gets an invite to Nicole’s to talk. She invites him by the pool, then tells him she had a wet dream about him. Nicole’s fiancé turns up, starts massaging him, then Mort bolts when he realises they want a three-way.
Kate and Mort spend lots of time together, going to the movies, to bars, karaoke and enjoying each other’s company. He even takes her to meet his family. However, before too long Simon shows up at Kate’s, threatening her life if Mort does not pay.
Mort reiterates in detail the story about Rita to Kate, who thought he had made up the story. After an imagined conversation he has with the corpse of an older woman he once knew, he is reminded she used to suggest he live life to the max while he can.
Meeting Simon to pay him off, when he proposes Mort pay him regularly rather than the debt being settled, they begin fighting. In the end, Simon jumps at him, overshoots and plummets to his death.
At LAX for their flight to Mount Fiji, Mort and Kate sit outside of the terminal. A gust of wind blows the tickets from his hands. Right after retrieving them, Mort gets hit by a bus. Accepting his fate, he says his goodbyes to Kate and dies.
