"Circle the Drain" is a song by American singer-songwriter Katy Perry. The song was written by Perry for her third studio album Teenage Dream (2010). It was additionally written by Christopher Stewart and Monte Neuble, while production was assisted by Tricky Stewart. It was released on August 10, 2010 by Capitol Records as the album's second promotional single. The electronic and rock song speaks about her relationship with her ex-boyfriend, Gym Class Heroes frontman Travie McCoy about critsising him.[1][2]

"Circle the Drain" has received mixed reviews from music critics, who noted similarities to Canadian rock singer and songwriter Alanis Morissette, but noticing that the song was even darker and one said it was like a "hooker on pills". "Cricle the Drain" received moderate success, peaking at number fifty-eight on Billboard Hot 100, number thirty on the Canadian Hot 100 and thirty-six on New Zealand single charts. Perry has performed the single on her California Dreams Tour.

Background[edit]

With her interview on Youtube, she had written the song in Atlanta, Georgia. She had explained that she wanted to get this song "off her chest", meaning they want to be free than being "anchorned down". Production had took place with Tricky Stewart, and additional writting by Christopher Stewart, Monte Neuble.[3] The song was released on August 10, 2010 as the second promotional single from the album.[4] Perry has and currently is performing the single on her California Dreams Tour.[5]

"Circle the Drain" is a electronic and rock song[6], that lasts for four minutes and thirty-two seconds. Lyrically, the song is mostly about her ex-boyfriend Gym Class Heroes frontman Travie McCoy.[7][8] She said that the song was inspired and was musically inspired by Alanis Morissette.[9]

Critical reception[edit]

Al Fox from BBC Music commented that "Circle the Drain" is a track that releases "menacing undertones".[10] Greg Kot from Chicago Tribune said that Katy really "sinks her black nail-polish into a goth rocker".[11] Zimbio said that "Lyrical prowess is not her forte; neither, in fact, is rhyming forte with foreplay, as she does painfully on the druggie-boyfriend takedown "Circle the Drain."[12] The song was also compared to Alanis's previous work aswell.[13] However, although Perry has not confirmed that its about Mccoy.[14]

Chart performance[edit]

"Circle the Drain" debuted at number thirty-six on New Zealand singles Chart, due to high downloads, but peaking for one week there.[15] The song also peaked at number fifty-eight on the US Billboard charts, but was charted because of promotional release, as the same with Canada, peaking at number thirty.[16]
