"A Girl Like Me" is a song by Barbadian recording artist Rihanna from her second studio album, A Girl Like Me (2006).

Production and recording[edit]

"A Girl like Me" was co-written by Evan Rogers, Carl Sturken and Rihanna (credited as Robyn Fenty).[1] Production of the song was handled by ROgers and Sturken on behalf of Syndicated Rhythm Productions.[1] It was recorded by Al Hemberger at Blue Wave Studio, St. Philip, Barbados.[1] It was mixed by Hemberger, while instrumentation was provided for by Sturken.[1] Background vocals were performed by Rihanna.[1]

Background and composition[edit]

According to the digital music sheet published at musicnotes.com, the song is written in the key of B minor and is set in common time with a moderate beat.[2] Rihanna's vocal range in the song spans from the low note of A3 to the high note of C♯5.[2] The instrumental uses a piano and guitar driven beat and the song incorporates elements of the musical genres Contemporary R&B and Dance-pop.[2]

Critical reception[edit]

The song received reviews from music critics as part of their album review of A Girl Like Me, and was met with a mixed response. Quentin B. Huff of Popmatters praised "A Girl Like Me", writing that the song is "refreshingly unpretentious" and compared it to the second single from it's parent album A Girl Like Me, "Unfaithful", which Huff labelled as "overboard with melodrama."[3] Celia San Miguel of Vibe magazine criticized the song, calling it a "stumble" on the album and a "yawn-inducing slow jam", but continued to write that the content of A Girl Like Me was generally better than that of her first effort, Music of the Sun (2005).[4] Bill Lamb of About.com simply commented that, along with other tracks from the album, "Kisses Don't Lie", "We Ride" and "Break It Off", the song was likely to appeal to urban audiences and markets.[5]

Charts[edit]

In 2009, "A Girl Like Me" debuted on the Spanish Singles Chart at number 29 on November 19, 2009, over three and a half years after the release of the album.[6] The following week, the song peaked at number 25, spending a total of two weeks on the chart.[6]
